Slow Computer

I recently switched my ISP from Time-Warner's roadrunner to Verizon. Since then, my computer has been running much slower than ever before. I've uninstalled unneeded programs; I clean out the temporary internet files folder five or six times a day, sometimes more; I check defrag regularly and run it, perhaps, twice a week, even more. It may seem like overkill to run defrag as often as I do since my computer never seems to run any faster but, I don't know what else to do? I'm very frustrated and it seems that my only solution is to buy a new computer. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Greetings and welcome :)

Did you switch antivirus software when you switched providers (I know some ISP's provide free protection, and the new protection could be the cause of the slowness)?

Please let me know and also do the following:

  • Please download Sysinternals Autoruns from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Note: If using Windows Vista or Windows 7 then you also need to do the following:
      1. Right-click on Autoruns.exe and select Properties
      2. Click on the Compatibility tab
      3. Under Privilege Level check the box next to Run this program as an administrator
      4. Click on Apply then click OK

    [*]Double-click Autoruns.exe to run it.

[*]Once it starts, please press the Esc key on your keyboard.

[*]Now that scanning is stopped, click on the Options button at the top of the program and select Verify Code Signatures so that it is now checked

[*]Click on the Options button again and this time uncheck Hide Windows Entries

[*]Once that's done press the F5 key on your keyboard, this will start the scan again, this time let it finish.

[*]When it's finished and says Ready. on the lower left of the program window, please click on the File button at the top of the program and select Save and save the Autoruns.arn file to your desktop and close Autoruns.

[*]Right click on the Autoruns.arn file on your desktop and hover your mouse over Send To and select Compressed (zipped) Folder

[*]Attach the Autoruns.zip folder you just created to your next reply

Thanks :)

Hello again :)

Any idea what this item is?:

iTwinAssist iTwinAssist Application (Verified) ITWIN PTE. LTD. c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\itwin\itwinassist.exe

Verify that your version of Java is up to date by clicking here, if it isn't and you require Java, then please do the following (otherwise skip the download and installation steps at the end, but do still follow the other steps, as you don't want remnants of old versions installed on your system either):

Update Java:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel and click Add\Remove Programs
  • Look for any entries related to Java and uninstall them
  • Once that's done download JavaRa from here
  • Extract it and double click it to run it
  • Select the language you desire
  • Click the Remove Older Versions button
  • Click here to visit Java's website.
  • Scroll down to Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 24. Click on Download JRE.
  • Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  • Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  • Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  • Click on the jre-6u24-windows-i586 link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  • Double click on jre-6u24-windows-i586 to install Java.

Open Autoruns and allow the scan to complete then do the following:

Click on the Logon tab and uncheck the box next to the following:

  • Service Manager.norun

Click on the Internet Explorer tab and uncheck the box next to the following:

  • Java™ Plug-In 2 SSV Helper
  • JQSIEStartDetectorImpl Class

Click on the Services tab and uncheck the box next to the following:

  • Creative Service for CDROM Access
  • IHA_MessageCenter
  • JavaQuickStarterService
  • McciCMService

Once that is complete, reboot your PC and check to see how the overall performance is and let me know if it has improved or not. Also, please don't forget to let me know what the item was that I asked about in the beginning of this post.

Thanks :)

Once again, thank you for your speedy response. I am about to begin following your instructions. First, this is the information you requested re:"itwinassist.exe"

It is a two part device, one part is plugged into my computer and the second part is plugged in to a remote computer. It enables a secure connection between the two computers and I can remotely edit any shared file from any location or copy files from either computer to the other.

I hope this gives you enough information. I will post once again when I've completed the steps you have outlined.
