Hello there. Yesterday, like so many other people it seems, my laptop got the XP Anti-Spyware 2011 bug. It had completely shut down my antivirus programs, including Malwarebytes, wouldn't let me do a system restore, or get on the Internet. After hours of fighting it, I got it to let my SUPER Anti-Spyware program to remove most of it. That let me get back into Malwarebytes which removed the remaining issues. I can get back online and that annoying window doesn't pop up anymore. So as far as functionality, I seem to be okay.

My only concern right now is that the security center doesn't recognize that automatic updates are on. When I tell it to turn them on, it says it can't turn them on and to go turn them on manually. So I go to the automatic updates section in the control panel, and the updates are in fact on. My security center just doesn't know that they are.

I'm not sure if this means something serious, or if maybe the virus is still lingering around somewhere. I'd just would rather be safe than sorry. Malwarebytes scans come back clean now. I'm just not sure what the next step would be in fixing this issue, so thank you for your time and assistance.

Sorry if double posting is against the rules, but I seem to have fixed the problem. This post can be deleted if necessary. Sorry for the trouble.

I will mention that even when I tried to go into Microsoft's site and download updates myself, it would come back with an error. Unfortuantely, I didn't write down the error number so I can't remember it. I did type that error number into the help search box on the site, and it brought up a solution someone had posted on their help forum. It said it meant the Windows Update software files were corrupted. (Or something like that.) It had me download an automatic fix, it ran for a couple minutes, restarted my computer, and now my security center sees that automatic updates are on, and when I check for updates manually, I don't get the error anymore.

I wish I had written down the error number so I could find the solution again, just in case it would be of use to someone else if they have the same problem. But maybe hopefully this can point them in the direction of that download too.
