XP Internet Security Malware/Virus

Recommended Posts

Hello!

On Saturday I was unfortunate enough to be hit by the XP Internet Security virus. I can access my computer and internet as normal now, but I've since had problems properly opening anti-virus .exe files (had to rename Malware bytes .install file etc.) and am worried the virus has infected the computer memory. I've managed to download Kaspersky and Malware Bytes, and have run them both several times since. I've also run rkill and then MB again, as instructed by a tutorial on bleepingcomputer.com. Kaspersky and Malware Bytes now both tell me my computer is clean, but due to my lack of technical/system computer knowledge, and the fact that the virus said XP which I thought was safe, I don't trust what my computer says at the moment!

So my question is, please could you tell me what else I can do/run to make triple sure that my computer is now safe?

I'm using Windows XP on a desktop computer, SP 3. Please let me know if I need to provide any further details and/or recent logs.

Thanks

Hello jessp! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed about any changes.
  • Post all of your log files, don't attach them.

Step 1

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to Update" tab and select Check for Updates.
  • Go to Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 2

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here, here or here

Double click dds to run the tool.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

[*]Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

In your next reply, please post the following logs:

  1. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  2. DDS log with Attach.txt

Okay... I'm "little" confused... You have already installed the following applications:

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011

Kaspersky Internet Security 2011

Microsoft Security Essentials

First of all, you should not have more than one anti-virus program installed as they will conflict and cause problems. You have three so you need to uninstall two of them. Of the three, I would recommend keeping Kaspersky Internet Security, so please uninstall the other two. This is my suggestion if you have license for Kaspersky, if you don't have, so uninstall both programs from Kaspersky and leave Microsoft Security Essentials.

Post a new fresh DDS log file.

I have uninstalled Kaspersky for now as I do not seem to have an up-to-date license for it. I intend to buy one though, and will then replace Microsoft Secuity Essentials with Kaspersky.

Here is the new DDS log file:

Good!

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CFAF8-download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

----------------------------------------------------------

[listF0-

[*]Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.

[*]Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Thanks for your very quick reply Maniac! Here is the ComboFix log (wasn't sure whether you wanted it attached or posted, so I'm just posting).

One further side question, it asked me whether I wanted it to install the Recovery Console - should I have done this/should I do this?

I haven't noticed any problems in the last few days. I haven't downloaded any further anti-virus programs (besides the ones you linked above) so I don't know whether the problem of them not installing will still occur.

My only concern is that I know some viruses manage to evade anti-virus scanners and programs, and I want to make double sure that is not the case here! As all these logs appear clean, can I safely assume this is correct now?

I haven't downloaded any further anti-virus programs (besides the ones you linked above) so I don't know whether the problem of them not installing will still occur.

You have one now - Microsoft Security Essentials and should not have more than one.

My only concern is that I know some viruses manage to evade anti-virus scanners and programs, and I want to make double sure that is not the case here!

Scan with your anti-virus program to make sure everything is okay now.

I scanned my cmputer again with Microsoft Security Essentials last night, and it came up clean. Well, besides Adware: Win32/Open Candy which comes up as low.

So I guess I can take this as my computer is definitely clean then?

Thanks Maniac!

I scanned my cmputer again with Microsoft Security Essentials last night, and it came up clean. Well, besides Adware: Win32/Open Candy which comes up as low.

It seems that Microsoft, in particular Security Essentials is aware of this adware, so I think it has removed.

So I guess I can take this as my computer is definitely clean then?

Yes, I think so. :)

One further question, should I be concerned about a 'Qoobox' folder that has suddenly appeared on my C:\ drive? Just want to check it's not part of the virus. Thanks.

No, don't worry! It's part of ComboFix, but will be removed.

Last steps for you:

Step 1

Go to Start => Run... and copy & paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall

Then hit Enter button.

This procedure will do the following:

  • Uninstall ComboFix
  • Delete its related folders and files
  • Reset your clock settings
  • Hide file extensions
  • Hide the system/hidden files
  • Resets System Restore again

Note: Make sure there's a space between ComboFix and /uninstall

Step 2

Please manually delete DDS.

Step 3

Please uninstall ESET Online Scanner.

Step 4

Keep your software up-to-date:

Sorry, one final question then I should be done! When the virus first appeared it seemed to turn off the Automatic Updates in the Windows Security Alerts window. I can't turn them back on in there - when I try, it tells me 'The Security Center could not change your Automatic Updates setttings'. When I right click My COmputer and select Automatic Updates it tells me they are on. Is there a virus-related problem here?

You can remove these leftover files and folders if listed:

C:\ComboFix

C:\QooBox

C:\combofix.txt

C:\combofix-quarantine-files.txt

For the automatic update issue, try this

Give this a try and see if it solves the problem..........

Go to Start>Run and key in:

regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

Click on OK or hit ENTER, wait a few seconds, then click on OK in the

RegSvr32 dialogue box.

Now, open the registry editor (Start>Run key in regedit then click on OK or

hit ENTER) and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv

If you find a DeleteFlag value in the right-hand pane, right-click on it and

select Delete.
