Hi, i've run into some trouble with this particular malware.

I've tried running MalwareBytes Anti-malware again and again but each time I try to open it, an hourglass appears next to my mouse pointer and then disappears. I've waited patiently, thinking it took a while to run but it never ran. I tried running AVG and Avast but they didn't run at all either. I switched the laptop to Safe Mode with Networking but the laptop did not run Malwarebytes or any other system either in this. I'm only accessing the interent through a desktop PC, and have no idea how to proceed. Thanks for the help.

I've tried to run through each step of the guide but I came to a few hiccups in some parts.

I attempted disabling the "[cmz vmkd] Virtual Bus" but the virus did not let me access the properties dialog box from right clicking My Computer. So I skipped that part and put it into Safe Mode w/ Networking.

I tried doing the Internet options and getting rid of the "Use proxy server for your LAN" but the box was already unchecked.

I skipped that part (and did not attempt the Fixme.bat portion) and instead put a few of those rkills on a flashdrive and put it onto the desktop of the infected laptop.

I ran 3 different Rkills. One of them worked but only very briefly because as soon as I ran the MBAM that was on my laptop already, the virus boxes came back up, and when the Rkill log came up the part that said

"Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running: "

was blank below it, even when the programs were (briefly) turned off.

Should I uninstall my previous MBAM and download a brand new one? Because when the virus originally popped up, I saw a dialog box with the icon of MBAM.

I'm misread your post, to get to the device manger try this:

Click Start, click Run, and then type devmgmt.msc > OK

See if the [cmz vmkd] Virtual Bus is there.

If not, please do this:

Download DDS by sUBs and post the scan results using Copy / Paste.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com

http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds

1. Double click dds.scr to run the tool.

2. When done, two DDS.txt's will open.

3. Save both reports to your desktop.

4. Please copy and paste the contents of DDS.txt back here.

Thank you for being so patient with me so far, I really appreciate it just wanted to say that.

I apologize for the double post, but I didn't find anything funny in the Device manager that looked similar to " [cmz vmkd] Virtual Bus"

So here is the content of the DDS.txt:

OK from your log I can see two files causing the problem:

C:\Documents and Settings\Santos\Local Settings\Application Data\mov.exe

c:\documents and settings\santos\application data\defender.exe

You will have to enable hidden files to see them:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/display-hidden-folders-in-xp/

See if you can delete them or rename them to .old

Let me know, MrC

Well I was able to find defender.exe and send it to the recycle bin (should I empty it at this point?) but when I went to Local Settings-->Application Data to find mov.exe I didn't find any file under that name, even with all the files unhidden. Would it be under a different name?

Link to post

Yes you can empty the bin.

That's what it shows in your log, see if there's any other funny files there.

C:\Documents and Settings\Santos\Local Settings\Application Data\mov.exe

and....

c:\documents and settings\santos\application data\defender.exe

Can you run rkill and MBAM now?

It's late where I'm at, so that's it for tonight...be back tomorrow morning, MrC

I unhid all files, (including the ones where it says that messnig with them will harm your computer) and then I found mov.exe. I tried to delete it but then it said, "If you remove it, your computer or one of your programs may no longer work correctly. Are you sure you want to move it to the recycle bin?"

Is it too great a risk or should I do it anyways?

Triple Post (I know this is against common netiquette but I need to update)

Update: Mission accomplished. You were right on the money with those files being the culprits, just for good measure i'm running MBAM again to see if there is anything left. I'll post the way I did it to quickly remove the virus:

I enabled and unhid every file I could, even the system files.

Ran rkill to stop the programs that were using the "mov.exe" and then went quickly through My Computer and branch down to the infected file before its programs could start up again.

Deleting the mov.exe resulted in a dialog box which said, "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" everytime I started a program or opened a file.

So I followed the instructions on this page:

http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6142_102-297223.html

to make all my files act as normal again.

(As I was posting the malware scan finished with 11 infected files so there was still some left over to take of)

And now my laptop is working better than before!

I'm very grateful for your help in removing the malware from my computer. I greatly appreciate you working with me into the wee hours of the night to help me voluntarily.

OK, That's Good News

Can you post all the logs from MBAM and then do this.....

Please download OTL from one of the links below:

http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe

http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.com

Save it to your desktop.

Double click on the icon on your desktop.

Click the Scan All Users checkbox.

Push the Quick Scan button.

Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here: (or attach them as .txt files)

OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened

Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
