Hello, I'm in need of some help and this definitely looks like the right place to come.

I had a Task Manager Disabled by Administrator issue that was quarantined and removed by Malwarebytes. Upon rebooting (into safe mode with networking), the Task Manager is now back under my control but I'm still getting Browser Hijacked (in IE and Firefox) when searching. Plus I'm getting Internet Explorer Script Errors that pop up every few minutes (even though I don't have IE open).

I was able to run Defogger ok and it is disabled.

I followed the directions in the sticky notes to get the logs for you, but when I ran GMER, I was never given the option to Save as per the instructions. I think part of the problem is that in Safe Mode it is displaying at 640 x 480 and I can not change it. I tried once to boot up normally and Windows just hung. So if the save button is there, I can't see it as the window won't adjust. I tried tabbing around but it only tabs between OK and Cancel.

Another problem is that I can't get Winzip installed and therefore can't zip the Attach.txt file. So I guess that will have to wait for now.

I also can not update to the newest version of Malwarebytes. I get the following message:

An error has occurred. Please report this error code to our support team.

MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING (5, 0, CreateFile)

Access is denied.

So here is my last MBAM log (run after I had used MBAM to remove fake.beep.sys and Hijack.TaskMgr):

Hello CMP877! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed about any changes.
  • Post all of your log files, don't attach them.

Please use regular mode for now.

Step 1

Windows XP:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • NOTE: If you get SHGetValue failed with error code 0, that only means that the tool has nothing to perform, continue on with the next step....
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask me and I'll explain how to do it.

Step 2

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to Update" tab and select Check for Updates.
  • Go to Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

In your next reply, please post the following logs:

  1. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  2. a new fresh DDS log only

Your log file is from Safe Mode?!

Hi Borislav,

In my original post, I noted that Windows seemed to hang upon trying to go into Regular Mode. So to insure that I could post to you I was still using Safe Mode. I have now been able to get in using Regular Mode. Although at the Windows XP screen it is extremely slow, but I am eventually able to get in as my user. I reran the MBAM and DDS in Regular mode and those logs appear below.

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Save the file to your desktop and name it CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. It may ask to reboot. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Note: These instructions and script were created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these instructions or use this script as it could damage the workings of your system.

Hi Borislav,

Just so you are aware, I followed your directions in the last post and after dragging CFScript.txt onto ComboFix it popped up 2 windows. The first said PEV.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. The second said You cannot rename ComboFix as Combo-Fix. Please use another name, preferbably made up of alphanumeric characters. I did not do anything with the 2 windows.

Even though those messages came up, ComboFix still ran, rebooted and produced a new log which I have pasted below.

How are things now?

I was waiting to see if there were any more steps to complete. But I am no longer getting Internet Explore Script Error messages, so that's good.

I did notice that Windows takes alot longer to boot up than it used to. Also launching Firefox it seems to be a bit slow in opening.

One question I had regarding Defogger. I had initially run Defogger to Disabled and I haven't done anything with it since (since instructions say to wait to be told to set it to Enabled again). I also did this while I was logged in as Administrator in Safe Mode.

So should I run Defogger again to Enabled? Should I do it with my own user in Regular mode?

Wait about that. Let's try this one:

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however may need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

  • Please go here then click on: EOLS1.gif
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: EOLS2.gif
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:

    • Remove found threats
    • Scan archives
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Fs-b]Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology

[*]Now click on: EOLS3.gif

[*]The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.

When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.

[*]Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.

[*]When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!

[*]Now click on: EOLS4.gif

[*]Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.

[*]Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

-

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Hi Borislav,

So it seems like everything that caused the original problem has been cleared up. Task Manager is ok. I'm not getting IE Script Error messages. I'm not getting hijacked when searching on Google or any other search engine.

I did notice that alot of icons seems to be missing from Start > All Programs, like Word and Excel. But if I navigate to a Word or Excel file through Windows Explorer, they both open with no problems. So I guess I can always make some new shortcuts.

Booting up is still very slow. It still sits on the Windows XP logo (with blue moving bar) for at least 2-3 minutes. Then the screen goes black for about 30 seconds and then I get the screen where I can click on my user account.

Here is the log from ESET:

Good! :)

Enable Defogger and manually delete it too.

Last steps for you:

Step 1

Go to Start => Run... and copy & paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall

Then hit Enter button.

This procedure will do the following:

  • Uninstall ComboFix
  • Delete its related folders and files
  • Reset your clock settings
  • Hide file extensions
  • Hide the system/hidden files
  • Resets System Restore again

Note: Make sure there's a space between ComboFix and /uninstall

Step 2

Please uninstall ESET Online Scanner.

Step 3

Please manually delete DDS, mbam-clean and mbam-setup.

Step 4

Keep your software up-to-date:
