Antivirus 09 Infection...Rawr!

Recommended Posts

First off, I am quite the novice with computer but I can still tell that my computer is "hosed". My computer, by the way, is a PC with windows xp (not sure of the edition).

Two days ago, I was searching on google and I noticed the links were abnormally bold. I clicked on said links and I was met with an onslaught of pop-ups ("go.google"). I can't truly remember when it told me that I needed antivirus 09 but I remember it did. For the last two days, I've been frantically surfing the web on another computer looking for any solutions. I came across many forums that malwarebytes would solve my problem. I went to http://www.download.com/windows/3055-8022_...l?tag=pdl-redir and downloaded it, but it seems that my symptoms are unique to anyone else's that I've encountered.

- I'm unable to view the majority of webpages but a rare few I can.

-Whenever I click on Spybot Search and Destroy, Hijackthis, or malwarebytes none launch

-I installed it successfully but at the end when it asks to launch (which I checked) it doesn't

-I have mcafee on the infected computer but it no longer performs scans saying "The required DAT files are missing or they are corrupted. Unable to initialize the scanning engine. Reinstall the product."

-I have tried running it in safe mode and renaming it but neither have worked

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Hysteria

Welcome to Malwarebytes

Please try the following routine to see if you can get Malwarebytes to run.

Click on Start, click Run, and then type devmgmt.msc and click OK

On the View menu click on Show hidden devices

Browse to Non-Plug and Play Drivers and you should see something like TDSSserv.sys

Highlight that driver and right click on it and select DISABLE

Now RESTART your computer.

Download a copy of Malwarebytes but DO NOT run it yet.

Rename the downloaded installer file to any generic name such as your own name but keep the .EXE extension on the file and run it.

Once the program is installed go to the UPDATE tab and try to update the program if you can.

Then go to the SCANNER tab and run a Quick Scan and allow MBAM to fix anything found.

If that does work then please follow the routine below and post a new topic in the listed forum with the requested information.

Please read and follow the instructions provided here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2936

When ready please post your logs here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=7

Someone will be happy to assist you further with cleaning your system.

During this scan and cleanup process you should not install any other software unless requested to do so.

Sorry for double posting.

I finally got Malwarebytes to scan and it found 70 some odd infected objects. My computer was running great but I'm still getting alot of pop-ups that I recognize from before when it began. I've scanned it multiple times back-to-back and it always finds at least 1 thing left even though I remove everything the scan before. Any way to stop the pop-ups and remove that last item?

No problem, just read the instructions here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2936 and post your logs here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=7

An expert will help you step by step to get the last of the nasties cleaned up. Please be sure not to install any software or use any removal/scanning tools exept those that you are instructed to by the expert who will be assisting you as doing so can make their job much more difficult. Good luck to you.
