Sluggish System

Recommended Posts

Newbie here. It's obvious you folks are light years ahead of my understanding, I refuse to call it knowledge, of how these anti- whatever programs work together or in opposition to each other. I have had two instances of trojans, ad ware and virus's and have at this time running on my windows XP, 80 gig hard drive, 504 MB ram. Due to these recent attacks I have installed the following; MalwareBytes, RegCure, AVG Free 8.0, and Ad-Aware. Is this overkill? Are these programs compatible? What is the best program to use with MalwareBytes to maximize protection?

I think the system is so very sluggish because I may have deleted some drivers I shouldn't have. What can I do to get this puppy running correctly?

AVG is A RESOURCE HOG. Avira AntiVir Antivirus is one of the best at prevention and detection. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avira_AntiVir_Pe...virus_d955.html and is free also Avast is another top free one http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avast_Home_Edition_d1968.html also only run realtime protection of one of those two antimalware programs either MBAM OR AD AWARE.

Thanks for the quick response. So, I will remove AVG and download Avira. I can do that. When you say onle have one malware running in real time I am not sure if either is running real time. I have the free version of MBAM and the free Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware has a program called Ad-Watch which I do not have unless I purchase their Plus or Pro editions. What determines whether either of these are running real time and how do I turn one off until I ask it to run?

the anti virus no matter which you choose to run will not prevent certain types of malware from entering your system. you should purchase the realtime protection and the best of the two you have is MBAM. AND THAT IS A LIFETIME KEY. A ONE TIME PURCHASE FEE ONCE YOU BUY IT ITS FOREVER. NO RESUBCRIBING EVER AND ITS PROTECTION MODULE IS A LEADER IN THE INDUSTRY. I would keep ad aware as a secondary scanner its good to have most people suggest that you have one realtime and one as a secondary. Regarding when you will know if realtime is on that happens once you purchase Mbam THEN ACTIVATE IT BY CLICING ON THE PROTECTION MODULE TAB, ONCE YOU RECEIVE YOUR LICENSE KEY BY EMAIL. THEN AND ONLY THEN WILL YOUR REALTIME PROTECTION BE WORKING Also a good way to help speed up your PC is to use CCleaner a safe recommended freeware that cleans out unnecessary junk files and internet tracks that are often left behind even after using your browsers clean up . http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No...lbar_d4191.html Also the use of a good firewall is needed in place of the Windows XP Firewall, a superb one like Online Armor Free tops in Leaktests is available here, http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-prote...n-software.html

It is best to completely remove AVG with its uninstaller then reboot:

Unfortunately Ad-Aware has become a bit behind the times and quite bloated so I would uninstall that as well.

RegCure can cause serious harm to the registry.

CCleaner is a good application and it has a safe registry cleaner.
