Programs cannot access internet

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum. I was tossing up between this forum or the malware forum, but I opted for PC Help because I have already removed the malware.. well.. I think I have.

Background: A few weeks ago my laptop was infected with the "Security Tool" malware. I could not use any of my already installed anti-malware programs to scan for it and remove it (Windows Defender, AVG and Spybot S&D). I went and downloaded another anti-malware program (Malwarebytes) which was successful in removing "Security Tool". However, it seems that the effects of "Security Tool" remain.

Problem: Windows Update can detect new updates available for download, but I cannot actually download them due to error 80072EFD. In addition to Windows Update, a number of my other programs cannot access the internet (eg. IE and iTunes).

I have Windows 7 Professional and IE version 8.0.7600.16385

IE doesn't work due to this error message: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. When I "Diagnose Connection Problems", IE/Network Diagnostics tells me the problem is "The remote device or resource won't accept the connection".

I have ZoneAlarm firewall installed and turned on.

The only option I have left is a reformat/reinstall/clean install of Windows, which to be honest, I can't be bothered doing, hence I've put it off for a while. But I'm at the end of my patience and am willing to do a clean install if necessary.

as you were infected and it seems that you might still be , the best thing to do is start a new help thread in the HJT section .
