TDSS files reappear after deletion

Recommended Posts

I have not really used it because I didn't want to chance anything with MBAM finding the tdss virus(es) every time I run a scan. Does anything need to done with these viruses?

I have, however, rebooted several times without it freezing on me.

Thanks for all of your help.

Okay. I'd like for you to run mbam, update it, and scan your BOX again. Reboot if it asks you to do so, after allowing it to remove everything it finds. Then run it again and post that log as well as a fresh hijackthis log.

It did not ask me to restart, but I did it. Thanks for all of your time. Here are the MBAM [the tdss is back :D ] and Hijackthis logs after the restart:

I forgot to mention that during the scan there was a popup message saying that there was a "system modification that may be a result of rootkit. do you want to perform a full scan".

It is attached in post #30. I have not changed anything with the computer since then so it should still be accurate. Let me know if you need a new one. Thanks.

That was entirely my bad! Sorry. I will examine that log now in fact, and get right back to you!

minor update; Okay. Some of the files I needed from you have been examined or are being examined by me at this time. So, what I'd like for you to do is update mbam and do a fresh scan, posting the logfile. We will get this resolved for you.

update #2; a few minutes later.

Found what I suspected, a live rootkit.

\systemroot\system32\drivers\TDSSmvpt.sys Obviously another newish variant.. Alright, Do the following:

If you can, please visit here and follow the instructions.

http://www.gmer.net/faq.php

Just in case you can't access it via website url, here's the IP

http://204.152.184.145/faq.php

Replace the rootkit.rustok with tdss, The instructions are the same regardless of this particular variant we're dealing with.

After rebooting your machine, provide a fresh hijackthis, and mbam log. Also include a new gmer log as well.

First off, using GMER I deleted the hidden tdss "service" file type, but did not do anything with the hidden tdss "module" file type. Should I do anything with the "module" file type?

Here are the updated MBAM and Hijackthis logs after restart. In addition I have attached the GMER log after the restart (and subsequent MBAM and HJT scans). I noticed that the GMER found some different tdss files this time. Please let me know what to do next. Thanks again.

Your logs look much better now.

I require the following files:

C:\WINNT\system32\TDSShrsr.dll

C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\TDSSmvpt.sys

C:\WINNT\system32\TDSSotct.dll

C:\WINNT\system32\TDSShrxm.dll

C:\WINNT\system32\TDSSvtql.dll

C:\WINNT\system32\TDSScahc.dll

Please move these all to a temporary folder, such as C:\HOLD1, and zip them. Once done, upload the .zip to uploads.malwarebytes.org

I could not locate any of these files using the windows search function so I am unable to upload them. Why do these files show up in the logs, but are not able to be located? The only file I found using the windows search for "tdss" was "TDSSmtyl.dat" and is located in the system32 folder. This file was created today at approximately 2pm. Do you need that file?

The computer seems to be running okay in the way of it restarting and running without freezing. I am just not sure if it is safe to start using the computer for banking, credit card payments, etc. with these tdss files still showing up. Any input or suggestions on what to do next?

Yep.. Since TDSS is being ever so friendly. I have yet another (drum roll!) method of killing her:

Please download combofix from This Webpage...and read through the instructions there for running the tool.

***Important Note***

Please read through the guidance on that web page carefully and thoroughly...and install the Recovery Console. Using this tool without the Recovery Console installed is NOT RECOMMENDED.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot into a special recovery (repair) mode that is not otherwise available. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It's a simple procedure that will only take a few moments.

Once installed, a blue screen prompt should appear that reads as follows:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

When you see that screen, please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please post back the following on your next reply:

C:\ComboFix.txt

New HijackThis log.

I fixed the 2 line items that you told me to and then restarted my computer and it fired right up. Ran MBAM with a clean log. It appears that nothing is running. I think you have about gotten this thing fixed for me; however, I found some files with tdss in the name using both the windows search and the search function in registry editor (regedit). Should I manually delete anything that has tdss in the name? Will this cause problems if I do so using the registry editor? Or should I leave them alone and hope that they are not running in the background? Thanks again.
