MB scan identifies malware but it reappears immediately

Recommended Posts

I was infected by System Tool a few days ago and think that I have completely removed it, HOWEVER, something is going on and I don't know if it is related or not.....XP Pro, Svc Pack 3.....when connected to the internet my modem indicator in bottom right tray is constantly lit and the hard-drive is running constantly....my email system (Yahoo) is closed and all browsers are closed.....when I disable the wireless adapter all activity slows and then stops. A scan with MB reveals the following 2 issues ("Malware.Trace"):

1. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\host

2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\id

I click "remove selected" and get confirmation that they were removed successfully. I then run MB again and the 1st issue above is back. Clean it and it comes back. If I connect to the internet the 2nd issue comes back along with the 1st. I suspect my computer is being used by some botnet or spamming system, because of the symptoms described above....but I am not technical, so I need help! Thank you. Stu

Hello and welcome, stuyoung1:

Sorry to hear about your infected computer.

Sounds like you could use some help.

3 options here: 1) run some prelim scans and start a thread at the "HJT" board, 2) open a free support ticket (if you are a paying customer), or 3) try the premium, fee-based support.

Alas, we do not work on malware removal in this particular sub-forum, but you are in the right "neighborhood".

Instructions on how to proceed are posted in the 2nd Important Topic pinned at the top of this forum: "I'm Infected - What Do I Do Now?".

To summarize:

Free, expert assistance can be found at the malware removal-HJT forum.

Please go to this page, print out, read and follow as many instructions as you can, skipping any you are unable to complete:

http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=69723

Then please describe your computer's symptoms as best you can and post the requested logs by starting a new thread here:

http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showforum=7

One of the authorized, trained experts will then assist you as soon as possible.

When you post, please be sure to select Track This Topic & choose one of the email options, so that you will be notified when someone responds; allow 24-48 hours before bumping your thread.

Alternatively, as a paying customer, you may wish to start a support ticket by contacting support at: support@malwarebytes.org, or by using one of the other support options here:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/premium-support.php

Also, please use the "Add Reply" button when replying here & at the other boards, so that it will be easier for everyone to follow the thread.

Hope this helps get you started,

daledoc1
