Wireless Keyboard ''Quick Keys''.

Hi, have not got a response after 8 days...should I wait? Can't find any info stating what to do in this case, repost, email etc.... ? Waiting my turn...that's all.

After some time, like 3 years, my [Dell model RT7D40] Wireless keyboard ''quick keys including volume control'' became inoperative. This is on both drives now and don't know if it has anything to do with any Windows Updates. Other than this, my keyboard and mouse work fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers from my Resource CD from Dell and selected the [NMB Wireless Mozart Drivers] as I always did in the past [and was instructed to do so] when reinstalling Windows or just the keyboard itself.

I called Dell and they have no clue as of how to fix the problem and I've searched all day and found NO FIX and many people with the same issue weather it was home users or the business end. Now, supposedly Logitech makes or made this for Dell. Can't find anything on Logitech's site on this kb either.

I'm running into a wall like many others and to go and purchase another kb will not solve this problem. Dell simply doe's not keep their library updated. I also found nothing on Microsoft's site either. Any advice?

I love this kb, especially the Volume Control feature....a must have!

Regards,

Dave

Consultation with Mr. Google turned up this at the Dell forum (scroll all the way down to the most recent post, which is still ~1 year old):

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forum...65/2866451.aspx

There's quite a lot out there in addition to that thread if you google it, but it's all pretty dated.

This suggests that: 1) the KB may be older than you think?, and/or 2) as a result, it's not being supported with driver updates?

I know from personal experience that chasing down software/drivers for "Dell" branded peripherals made by Logitech can be a pain.

(Had some issues recently with my NEW Dell Bluetooth travel mouse for my laptop -- royal pain, and, you're right, Dell was clueless, even though the computer was only 1 year old!)

I eventually CALLED Logitech tech support, and was able to get it sorted out.

Since topics here tend more towards malware-related stuff, you might also try www.bleepingcomputer.com (excellent), or the Dell forums (fair to marginal) for advice.

Another thought: could it simply be a KB hardware failure from old age, in which case no software or driver update is going to make it work? (Just asking...)

At some point, you might just have to call it a day with this particular KB.

There are some decent wireless KBs out there on the market, but the technology is not perfect.

(Personally I prefer the reliability of USB...)

www.newegg.com is a good place to check trustworthy reviews & shop with good prices, service.

Well, that's all I can think of.

Hope it helps a bit,

Thanks for your input. I just think there isn't a fix for it. Old age I feell is not a factor. The whole keyboard would be affected and not just a part of it. It's funny the kb acts exactly the same on different drives. I feel it was an update of some sort! Somtimes technology screws us. I've read the link u sent me. I'm very familiar with it too. Got nowhere with the advice one person offered. He made it sound too simple. My uninstall and reinstall's got me nowhere.

I think this entire issue is UNREAL. Thanks for your input.

DJ

I will check your info out.

I tested my kb today on my older Dell XPS T500 [with the same op. sys. Win XP] but I didn't do any Windows Updates to it as of yet and all kb keys funtion just fine. I didn't have to install anything from my Resource cd either. So go figure? I just don't think we can get updated drivers from Dell.

Here's the thing I found here; the drivers from my older Dell are the same drivers I have on my newer Dell, the on I have an issue with now. The kb drivers are from [ C:\\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\kbdclass.sys ].

So why would these stop working all of a sudden? Makes no sense at all. Works on one pc and not the other?

Thanks,

DJ

@ screen317..............Now the system that my Dell wireless kb ''WORKS on'' has Win XP Home ''SP2''...Single drive!

The op.sys my kb ''DOESN'T'' work on is WIN XP home ''SP3''. This op sys I have on two drives on my newer Dell.

The difference ? SP3 and SP2. I'm sure you see a connection here. I do, just can't pinpoint it!

DJ

Hi,

Uninstall SP3 on the XP Home SP3 computer, restart your computer, and see if the keyboard works.

Ensure that you aren't connected to the Internet during this time and that your security software is temporarily disabled. Once confirmed or rebuked, reinstall SP3 and re-enable your security software.

Ok. In step one I removed SP3 and restarted. Kb short keys didn't work. I'm off line at this time and sec. features disabled.

You then said to reinstall sp3 -gotta go online for this-with my security features ''Off''! I rebooted again.

What's not to understand? A simple uninstall and reinstall with security features off. The kb shorts don't work.

What is ''Rebuked''? Reboot?

What is ''Rebuked''? Reboot?
Meant to say refuted, not rebuked.

What I'm getting at is the following: Uninstalling SP3 to SP2 did not give functionality to the keyboard, meaning, SP3 is not the cause of it not working.

I have an idea. On the computer that it does not work on, do the following:

Download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post attach.txt directly into your reply.

I've read that certain pieces of Logitech software can be responsible for the incompatibility.

Try uninstalling this from Add or Remove Programs:

Logitech Gaming Software

Restart your computer, plug the keyboard back in, and see if functionality is restored. If not, I don't really have any other suggestions. This is quite an obscure problem, and it's unfortunate that Logitech wont offer support for it.

I have a Logitech Gaming Controller and had no incompatability issues with my wireless kb before v.s. my controller. I did uninstall it at any rate-the controller. Rebooted and quick keys don't work. Can't figure it out myself. It works on one pc but not this one and I just added XP SP3 to the other pc-kb and it still works. I'd hate to do a clean install of my op.sys. for this problem, but I may do it. I got to have my vol. control back.

One more thing I picked up from somebody on this: individual had the same problem on XP with a wireless keyboard. He said ''Go to service. ( control panel, administrative tools, services) and make sure the HID Input Services is set to Automatic. Start the service. I notice that when I start my computer and press on the volume keys it takes about 15 or so seconds to load, but it will load'' .

Ok, I said I did that and service would not start even after rebooting my pc. I think maybe I have a corrupt [ C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs] file? This is the location of the exe file I copied/pasted to my reply.

Automatic mode ''Was'' set but the service showed ''Stopped''! I tried to start it by clicking ''Start'' of course and it gave me this error ;

[ Could not start HID Input Service on Local Computer, ERROR 126: Specific module could not be found].

Would you have any advice on this at all?

Thanks-I tried that earlier and it didn't help. I will keep at it till I find a fix. A Windows Repair is a ''Dirty Install'' and causes more crap to go wrong on the pc than it's worth. Dell even told me this. Been down that road before. I've even tried the Microsoft Fix It Center - Utilities and the darned utilities don't want to run on any of my pc's. Many complaints in their forums on this too.
