My computer is partitioned for myself as the main user and a guest. The main user side in infected with antivirus.NET (and on that side I can't open a browser, run programs like Maleware, etc.). I can, however run the PC normally from the guest side, and can run Malewarebytes. It reports no threats at all. Is this becuase it can't look across the partition? Or is Maleware just unable to detect antivirus.Net? And what can I do? The files I need to access are on the other side of the partition. Oh, and I'm running Vista, if that is important.

Hello CooperH! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed about any changes.

We'll use the main user only. Now:

Step 1

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. [-i](courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

  1. rkill.exe
  2. rkill.com
  3. rkill.scr
  4. rkill.pif
  5. WiNlOgOn.exe
  6. uSeRiNiT.exe

Please post the log in your next reply.

Note: The log can be found at the root of your installed hard drive entitled rkill.log

Step 2

Please locate to:

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes

rename mbam.exe to firefox.exe .

Step 3

[*]Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

[*]Go to Update" tab and select Check for Updates. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. If you already

Not sure if I'm replying correctly. Several questions. The first is that you said to do this is the main user identity. Sorry, but nothing will run there except antivirus.net -- can't do anything at all there. Second, if running your suggested programs is OK from the guest user indentity, OK then. It appears I was able to get one of the first two programs in your list to run. I have no idea where I find a log in the root directory of the drive. The third question is that I can get Malewarebytes to run in the guest side (I downloaded it earlier today). It won't update, for some reason, but it runs just fine and reports everything is OK.

Thanks for the info, but I have a few questions. The first is that I really can't get anything at all to run on the infected side of the computer -- but I think you said that was where I should be running your suggested programs. I can run them from the unenfected side, is that OK? And second, as I've said, I can't run Malewarebytes at all on the infected side, but when I run it on the good side it reports no problems. So I really don't know what to do here.
