How to get MBAM to update on a USER account XP

Recommended Posts

Setting up my GF's PC with 3 accounts, XP PRO, SP3:

#1) Administrator (her).

#2) User (her).

#3) Guest (her kid).

I cant get the MBAM program to do an UPDATE in the USER PROFILE. This is used as an ON DEMAND scanner for various DLs.

Any ideas as to get this to work?

Greetings :)

If you're using the PRO version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware then you would want to schedule the updates to run silently from the SYSTEM account, but if using the free version, there is no way to update the program outside of an administrative user account because limited user accounts do not have sufficient privileges to write to the database location (%AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware).

Setting the update to run silently from the SYSTEM account gets around this limitation because the process is run with SYSTEM privileges, which are comparable to admin privileges.

If using the PRO version, you do the following:

  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (from your admin account) and click on the Protection tab.
  • Click the Scheduler button and select the Update tab in the Scheduler window.
  • Select the time, day and frequency that you would like your update to occur and select the checkboxes for the options you desire (Show tooltip balloon after successful update. etc.)
  • Click on the Add button

That will allow the updates to run because the scheduler runs with system privileges.

Are you using the scheduler built into Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or are you trying to use the Windows Task Scheduler?

-Using the FREE version.

-I tried this:

-From ADMIN desktop, MBAM>(right click)PROPERTIES>SHORTCUT>ADVANCED>RUN WITH DIFFERENT CREDENTIALS>OK>APPLY>OK.

-From USER desktop, MBAM>(right click)RUN AS>THE FOLLOWING USER>ADMINISTRATOR>(password)>OK

-ACCESS DENIED

-Did the double click on desktop shortcut, RUN AS pops up, same thing, access denied...............

ANY other ideas, workarounds,,,,something???

I'm almost sure that the updates WONT work in Windows Task Scheduler, for the free version.

I'm focusing on elevating the permission to run in the user account,,,

OR,,,,,,

Got an idea,,,,,,

Add a desktop shortcut/file, or something, to the SHARED FOLDERS, add that to the USER desktop, run as a shortcut to the ADMIN file???

BRB

MichaelT,

We highly recommend upgrading to the PRO version of MBAM in order to achieve this, not to mention the incredible realtime protection.
