DNS changer malware - removal problem

Recommended Posts

I have a problem with DNS changer malware and hope you can help me. When I use the likes of google/Yahoo from either IE or Firefox and click on a suggested link the page returned is somehing quite different! I have run malwarebytes (several times) and as per attached file it finds 6 files to be deleted. I do this, it requests a reboot to delete them and when I check again they are still there and the problem persists I have tried disconnecting the PC from the BB hub (BT home hub) and it makes no difference. As suggested I have run Pandaactive scan and HJT and have attached the files from these. I hope you can help me.

Hi Martin and Welcome to Malwarebytes

Sorry for the delay but your post was originally in the wrong forum. I've read your logs and I think we've found your issue.

Please follow the directions below and we'll see if we can get this removed for you.

Click on Start and in the Search bar type in:
services.msc
and hit the enter key.

This will bring up the SERVICES Applet where you can manage services.
  • Scroll down to
    Windows Tribute Service
    or
    kdegu.exe
    (Whichever is present)
  • Right click the entry, select
    Properties
    and press
    Stop Service

  • When it shows that it has stopped, please set the
    Start-up Type
    to
    Disabled
Press OK until you get back to Windows.

  • Run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the button at the bottom of the choices.
None of the above, just start the program

  • At the lower right, click on the
    Config
    button, and then the
    Misc tools
    button and select
    Delete an NT Service

  • Copy / Paste the following into the box that opens, and click
    OK
    Windows Tribute Service
    or
    kdegu.exe
    (Whichever is present)

  • In HJT Choose Open the Misc Tools Section again and choose
    Open process manager
    , Highlight:
    Windows Tribute Service
    and Choose
    Kill Process

HJT may not be able to locate that Service name but please try it as posted above.

Then reboot your computer and run MBAM and go to the UPDATE tab and update the program, then run a Quick Scan and fix anything found and reboot again.

After the reboot please run HJT and save the log and post back both the MBAM and HJT log and I'll take a look again.

Thanks for response and sorry for posting in wrong place.

I opened up servcies applet ok, found Windows Tribute servcie ok (it is the right on as it has path to executable shown as

c:\windows\system32degu.exe -srv. Howver the process was stopped already and shown as automatic. When I tried to disable it I got the following error message - 'The specified service does not exist as an isnatlled service'. I then pressed ok and got the next message as ' Windows was unable to query status of service Windows Tribute Service. The remote connection on local computer has been broken.'

I noticed on the services applat there are 2 tabs - Standard and extended. Both had WTS and both gave me the same result. It appears that the service is already stopped but I cannot disbale it - it remains as automatic.

I have not gone beyond this point in your instructions as I'm not sure if thsi is advisable. Should I run HJT and try and delete?

Thanks, Martin Hodges

Excuse me butting in please, but this should now be in MBAM definitions. I got the man on it today and he wrote in for Windows Tribute. So update MBAM, quick scan post that log and a new HJT.

I have updated MBAM and rerun - please see attached log and HJT log

regards & many thanks

Well it looks like there may be something more here. Please update MBAM again and run a Quick Scan and FIX anything found.

Reboot your computer. After the reboot start MBAM and go to the Logs tab and open the latest log and post that back please.

Also please run this and post it back:

Please click on
START - RUN
and copy and paste the following into the box and click OK.
CMD /C SC QUERY >C:\MYSERVICES.TXT | NOTEPAD C:\MYSERVICES.TXT

I thought you would like to know something stange but wonderful has happened. I had to reboot PC (as Outlook had forgotten my password) and then noticed that after reboot the DNS changer problem had gone away ;) I re-ran MBAM and found a clear log !!! I also checked servcies.msc and windows tribute service had gone.

I attach clean MBAM log and am more than happy to take any further action you might recommend but if this is indeed a fix then all that I can say is a big thank-you for your prompt support and expert help. Please let me know if any further action is needed.

Thanks for the update.

Tomorrow please update MBABM again and do another Quick Scan and fix anything found and Reboot.

Then AFTER the reboot run another HJT scan and save log.

Then post back both of those logs. MBABM first, then HJT.

Also let me know if there are any other symptoms of a Malware issue on your system.

Thanks.

All looks clear and I have not noted any other symptons on PC now. Here is MBAM log (there was nothing to fix) followed by HJT log that I did after reboot. Thanks again.

Great looks good. Thanks for following up.

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-VISTA

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore-Vista

  • Click the
    Vista/Start
    icon.
  • Right Click >> Computer

  • Click
    Properties
    .

  • Click the
    System Protection tab
    .

  • Uncheck
    All drives

  • Click "Turn Off System Restore" at the prompt then click "Apply".

  • Restart your computer.

Turn ON System Restore-Vista

  • Click the
    Vista/Start
    icon
  • Right Click >> Computer

  • Click
    Properties
    .

  • Click the
    System Protection tab
    .

  • Checkmark All drives
that were selected previously then click "Apply".

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

(Vista users, you must ensure that any program versions downloaded are Vista compatible
BEFORE
installing)

Spybot Search and Destroy

Download it from
here
. Just choose a mirror and off you go.

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly
here

Install SpyWare Blaster

Download it from
here

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster
here

Install WinPatrol

Download it from
here

Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works
here

Install FireTrust SiteHound

You can find information and download it from
here

Install hpHosts

Download it from
here

hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,

tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites

by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Enable automatic Windows Update on your system in Control Panel, or at least manually scan each week for updates.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic well and this is a must. I recommend
Comodo Firewall Pro
