BSOD

Recommended Posts

I just had a blue screen again when restarting. This is the 3rd time it has happened. The first and second time it happened was when I deleted the Ubuntu partition, rebooted, fixed the mbr, reinstalled Ubuntu, booted windows and the first reboot from windows resulted in a bsod. This time I did a normal restart and it took several minutes to reboot and finally bsod.

I'm concerned the NTFS file system suffered damage. I deleted the swap space under Ubuntu which could not be re extended, but only formatted by windows. Windows has reinstalled a generic driver for the 3rd time for some reason.

Edit: Did a check disk.

Have you ran a diagnostics on your HD, Mother board, and memory?

Hi friend!

I would like to know more about this. I'm a noobie, but I like learning new things.

If you could explain how to do this; I would really appreciate it

Then if you have a Dell computer, when you turn on your computer, hit the F12 Key and you should see in the menu something that says Diagnostics (or something close to that). If it is really old, the computer should have come with a bootable diagnostics CD/DVD.

Hello friend!

I only have have a Application CD. I have made a slip stream CD of XP3. I used it once.

I prefer using my backup images when I have a problem I can't fix.

I have never used the F12 Key. I have seen it displayed in upper right hand corner after restart.

If I see diagnostics; do I just click on it?

What does it do ?? I have used chkdsk and sfc /scannow, but never used Diagnostics (F12)

Thank you for your reply sir!!

Firefox!

I hit F12.

I saw this option. IDE-Drive Diagnostics.

I just entered Normal and PC restarted.

I didn't know what I was doing, so I didn't click on Drive Diagnostics.

Sorry I'm so dumb. I have never tried this before, and it's a little scary to me>

Gary,

you should probably start your own thread, as you and Buttons probably have different issues going on. Also, its best to have your own thread anyway so each person can get help instead of both of you getting help in the same thread where it can get very confusing.

Hello good friend!! I'm not confused. I'm not having any problems. I just read this topic and saw some thing I had never heard of. Firefox was kind enough to explain. I found Drive Diagnostics on my PC with the F12 Key, but sense I'm not having any problems, I decided not to click on it and just rebooted Normal. I know about the memory test and burned me a disk to check my RAM. As far as I know I have no problems.I just try to learn at least one thing a day.I know I'm windy: that's the way some of us old people are. I will not post further on Buttons topic. Thanks Firefox and thank you mountaintree. I will stay out of the way.

garybear!! :P

Hitting the F12 Key and running the Hard Drive Diagnostics is a NON-Destructive test of the hard drive. It will not erase anything, it just tests it. It not a bad idea to run it from time to time to help detect when your drive is STARTING ot go bad. If the test comes back as PASSED then your fine, if it says FAIL its time to backup and replace the drive.

Thanks Firefox. I have never done that, but I'll give it ago.

I really appreciate you friend!! I have my OS backed up with Macrium Reflect. I back up regularly.

I have restored to a cold HD before, just to see if it worked, and it worked perfectly.

I'll leave you guys alone, sorry Buttons, didn't mean to hijack your thread.
