Infected with adware

Recommended Posts

So this has been going on for a while, some months. I haven't had time to address the issue until now. I believe it started when I went on a page which loaded a java servlet. I tried to kill Java but it was too late and dumped some crap on my computer.

Now, every once in a while, I'll get a 'popup' that goes to some sort of page with a referrer link...

Some of them are "you won...", some are "you're infected", and some are just random.

The unusual thing to note is, it happens in any browser that I have open, which makes me think that it's not just an infected browser (i've tried reinstalling FF, using a brand new browser, etc). It seems to be something running in a different process which launches this stuff through shell and just opens it in whatever browser is handling URL requests at the time.

It will usually give me one right when I launch my browser (But never before), and um... that's all I can think of right now.

Hello ArmedMonkey! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.
  • Stay with the thread until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed about any changes.

Step 1

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Step 2

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.

Double click dds.scr to run the tool.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

[*]Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

  1. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  2. DDS log with Attach.txt

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Unfortunately, no change. Another detail I noticed (which, I admit, probably won't be very helpful) is that despite the fact that it doesn't seem to be attributed to just one browser it does seem to be able to track my recent searches through google. Some of the ad pages it goes to have querystrings for my most recent search.

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, change it to Cure and then click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • Click the Report button and copy/paste the contents of it into your next reply

Note:It will also create a log in the C:\ directory.

TDSKiller seems to have done the trick. It detected a rootkit (see logs)

2010/12/30 16:29:18.0859 \HardDisk0 - detected Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.tdl4 (0)

2010/12/30 16:29:18.0862 ================================================================================

2010/12/30 16:29:18.0862 Scan finished

2010/12/30 16:29:18.0862 ================================================================================

2010/12/30 16:29:18.0869 Detected object count: 2

2010/12/30 16:30:12.0098 Locked file(sptd) - User select action: Skip

2010/12/30 16:30:12.0126 \HardDisk0 - will be cured after reboot

2010/12/30 16:30:12.0126 Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.tdl4(\HardDisk0) - User select action: Cure

(I uninstalled the sptd manually and did a scan again to see that the entry was gone because I knew what it was associated with)

I'm curious about this one because it's the first piece of malware I wasn't able to remove from a computer myself and manually. Are you familiar with this one at all in terms of how it works and where it hides?

In any case, thanks very much for your help and I wish you and yours a happy new year!

TDSSKiller.2.4.12.0_30.12.2010_16.29.01_log.txt
