Laptop appears to have the System Security - Warning Your're in Danger! virus/malware.

I've been reading posts on here, and my major issue to start with is that I can't get any programs to run.

Can't get MBAM to run (was already loaded on this laptop), even after renaming to winlogon.

Can't get defogger, DDS, OTL, or hijackthis to run.

Have no idea where to go from here!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

DSH

PS - Would it be beneficial to run any of these scans while in safe mode? I've run MBAM in safe mode, but it doesn't pick up anything.

Hello DSH! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.
  • Stay with the thread until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed about any changes.

We'll use Regular mode.

  • Download OTL to your desktop. Otherwise, try OTL.com or OTL.scr .
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Once OTL has completed its first scan it will save notepad copies of the scans in the folder that OTL was started from. Unless set to produce an Extras log it will only produce OTL.txt in subsequent scans.

A copy of an OTL fix log is saved in a text file at

  • :\_OTL\Moved Files
    • in most cases this will be C:\_OTL\Moved Files

Unfortunately, I can't run OTL.exe, OTL.com, or OTL.scr except in safe mode (which I'm not sure will do any good since MBAM didn't pick up anything in safe modes). I double click the icon for each and nothing happens, except the error message in the lower right saying the application cannot be executed.

Thoughts?

Should I send you the output files from safe mode?

DSH

Step 1

First of all, you should not have more than one anti-virus program installed as they will conflict and cause problems. You have two so you need to uninstall one of them. Of the two, I would recommend keeping AVG 2011 , so please uninstall Norton 360 .

Step 2

  • Run OTL.exe
  • Under Custom Scans/Fixes post the following script:

:files
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\cLlAj06309
C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\*.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\*.tmp
C:\Documents and Settings\David Hodges\Desktop\System Tool 2011.lnk

:Commands
[purity]
[emptytemp]
[resethosts]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, when it is done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open log"
  • Please post that log in your next reply.

Do not see Norton 360 on Add or Remove Programs from Control Panel.

Did see LiveUpdate from Symantec, which I tried to uninstall only to get an error message saying The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed...

I tried to run OTL (.exe, .scr, .com), but nothing happens except a balloon pops up from the taskbar saying "WARNING! Application cannot be executed. The file tfswctrl.exe is infected. Please activate your antivirus software."

Thoughts?

Thanks for your help.

Went through regedit to remove all references to Norton 360 I could find.

Ran OTL with the fix, rebooted and missed the log. So I ran the fix again and got the log on the second reboot. Here is what it says:

Awesome!

You can update and perform a scan with MBAM to check:

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Awesome! :P

Last steps:

Step 1

  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Step 2
