MalBytes / Avast can not find keylogger

Hi M Law plays world of warcraft and somehow managed to get herself hacked and then made the brilliant move of logging in my wifes account on her comp which then also got hacked. I installed Avast and MalBytes and even used the windows version (Vista) but they all say the machine is clean. I have read through here and ran hiJack and ComboFix. She is freaked out that it is permanently on her computer now and wants me to do a full format. Maybe one of you with more log reading experience could help me out?

Thanks!

Hello Frizdag! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.
  • Stay with the thread until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed about any changes.

Already been removed from ComboFIx. Here it is:

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Drivers/Services )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

.

-------\Service_usnjsvc

More information here:

http://spywaredlls.prevx.com/RRFDIE44332779/USNJSVC.SYS.html

usnjsvc is an exploit:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploit_(computer_security)

I think you've made a huge mistake, since you ran ComboFix without supervision by a trained person for the purpose.

http://kdiamondkenny.blogspot.com/2009/07/combofix.html

I suggest you to perfrom an additional scan:

Step 1

  1. Go to Start => Run... and copy & paste next command in the field:
    ComboFix /uninstall

  2. Then hit Enter button.

This procedure will do the following:

  • Uninstall ComboFix
  • Delete its related folders and files
  • Reset your clock settings
  • Hide file extensions
  • Hide the system/hidden files
  • Resets System Restore again

P.S.: Make sure there's a space between ComboFix and /uninstall

Step 2

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however may need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

  • Please go here then click on: EOLS1.gif
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: EOLS2.gif
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:

    • Remove found threats
    • Scan archives
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology

[*]Now click on: EOLS3.gif

[*]The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.

[*]When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.

[*]Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.

[*]When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!

[*]Now click on: EOLS4.gif

[*]Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.

[*]Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Step 3

Also, I would like you to generate a "Add/Remove Software list" log using the HijackThis application. Here is how you can do this:

To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:

  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

  1. ESET Online Scanner log
  2. Add or Remove Programs list

Thanks so much Borislav for the advice!

You are right once I saw what ComboFix was doing I knew it was a mistake but I knew it could be a lot worse if I closed it at that point. I ran both ESET and HiJack amd attched the logs. On a side note I have three questions you might know?

1. How did MalwareBytes (The best malware tool) and Avast miss this? They both have been so strong in the past for me?

2. Any idea where this would have come from? Being in that file could mean anything from what I can tell.

3. Any recomendation on what software would have cuaght this? I am sure she would get whatever it takes to prevent this from happeneing again just not sure which.

Thanks!

Frizdag
