How is my protection?

Recommended Posts

One real good program that I use is called ShadowProtect. It basically creates images of your computer and you can use it to restore from.

I have mine configured to do a full backup image once a week, and then incremental images throughout the week daily. The best part of this software, is that my images are saved on a network drive. If my computer was to completely burn up, motherboard, ram hard drive and all, I know my data is safe. Not only safe, I can restore my image to any computer no matter the hardware, and it will work, just the way I had it before, and no blue screens. (on some occasion I have had to install a couple of drivers but that is it).

i would recommend using comodo's firewall instead of windows one as the windows one is not good enough also if you run sandboxie you should be more protected thats just my to pounds worth

Never heard of Comodo, will give it a try :)

Do you use it on XP or/and 7 ?

Any other comments regarding to this program?

Since it is an all in one, do you still realy need mbam?

Does that goes for every AV and not only MSE?

No, just MSE. Some AV's do require it, especially more advanced ones that contain firewalls and/or HIPS components. MSE is a very basic antivirus. It has excellent detection rates but the way it actually functions is very simple in comparison to many AV's and its exclusion settings work very well when applied to a process or file. In fact, its simplicity is one of the reasons that I use it myself on several of my own systems.

That's your opinion. I've been using MSE since its release and tested it against some very nasty things and it did a fine job. It's also far lighter on resources than any version of AVG I've ever seen, though AVG and Avast! do offer more modules/features.

True, they are heavier. But I like it heavy and clean instead of light and infected :)

This was actually the reason to run and test MSE on that laptop. If I would

have sticked with AVG you would never had heard from me (so blame it on MSE :P )

Comodo does fairly well. :) You still need mbam as one solution does't protect against everything. :)

What should be the exclusions when using MBAM alongside Prevx?

Not sure what all is needed but it does not hurt to just add the ones below....

Please exclude the following files from your antivirus:

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went.

Spywareblaster is a passive form of protection and won't conflict with MSE or MBAM :)

As for your original question, I've used that exact combination (MSE+MBAM PRO+Windows Firewall) for some time now on 7 x64, 7 x86, Vista x64, Vista x86 and XP x86 and it's been excellent .

Just make certain you set proper exclusions to avoid performance issues:

Set Exclusions for Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware in Microsoft Security Essentials:

  1. Open Microsoft Security Essentials and click on Settings at the top
  2. Click on Excluded processes on the left
  3. Click on the Add... button
  4. Click on the + next to your primary hard drive (usually C:)
  5. Click on the + next to Program Files (or Program Files (x86) if running a 64 bit version of Windows)
  6. Click on the + next to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  7. Click once on mbam.exe and click on OK
  8. Repeat steps 3-7 for the following files:
    • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
    • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe

[*]Click on Save at the bottom and click Continue if prompted

[*]Close Microsoft Security Essentials

Set Exclusions for Microsoft Security Essentials in Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and click on the Ignore List tab
  • Click the Add button on the lower left
  • In the small browse window that opens, navigate to C:\Program Files and click once on Microsoft Security Essentials and click OK
  • Close Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Just got my laptop back today. So in MBAM it should say "Folder" under the category then just C:\ Program Files \ Microsoft Security Essentials ?
