Help Needed - Can't get rid of infections

LOL

Recommended Posts

About a wek ago I picked up a virus and nothing I do now seems to get it completely clear

It was originally disabling the windows firewall, so I replaced this with Zone Alarm

This seems to have helped, but I'm still having problems at least daily and constant re-directs on the internet

I'm sure there must be malware there, but I can't get it clear - Malwarebytes has just run and found nothing

Any help would be appreciated

Hello ,

And :D My name is Elise and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I will be working on your malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you may have with your machine.

Please note that whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.

  • The cleaning process is not instant. Logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.
  • Please reply using the Add/Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic.
  • The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, send me or a moderator a personal message with the address of the thread or feel free to create a new one.

Note - you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!

It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

-------------------------------------------------------------

In the meantime please, do NOT install any new programs or update anything unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem

If you still need help, please include the following in your next reply

Hi Elise and thanks - I'll be grateful for any help you can give

I have the logs posted below, having read the pinned post

I tried to attach them originally, but couldn't - I'll follow your other instructions now

The main problms I'm having are re-directs on the web, the same two websites seem to be trying to attach the computer and keep being blocked by Avast. I know it is good that they are being blocked, but ther surely must be something wrong that the same two sites keep trying to gain access

Thanks again for your help and I'll try to post the other stuff you ask for shortly

LOL

Sorry Elise, for some reason I still can't add the logs - it seems as though the system won't let me add more than a few words

I'm completely new to any kind of forum, is there some setting on my computer that could be causing this

Thanks LOL

Hello, this is often seen with the infection you have. I prefer logs pasted, but of course, if you can't do that, its okay to attach them. :D

Unfortunately you have a nasty rootkit on board. Please read the following information first before starting the cleaning process.

BACKDOOR WARNING

------------------------------

One or more of the identified infections is known to use a backdoor.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would advice you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the infection has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!

Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.

  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Hi, it looks like that went okay. :D Lets see what else needs cleaning.

COMBOFIX

---------------

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Query_RC.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

RC_successful.gif

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi Elise

I encountered a proble trying to run Combofix

It identified two active real time scanners on the computer for Norton Antivirus and AGV antivirus, warning that it could be dangerous to run the tool without disabling them

However these programmes were removed from the system previously and as far as I can tell are not active. I uninstalled AVG last week using Revo Uninstaller, set to remove everything. Norton waqs taken off at least a couple of years ago when I started using AVG

If there are scanners running I have no indication of this and no idea how to stop them

Is it safe to proceed with Combofix?

Thanks

I have been struggling all week to rid my computer of the fake Microsoft Essentials Security Alert Trojan. I have downloaded the MBAM download from the link to removal instructions on bleeper.com to a flash drive on my wife's computer, then transferred to my computer running in Safe Mode with Networking (Windows xp) run the MBAM setup which seeems to have installed malwarebytes, gone onto the internet to get an update. i ran the fast scann and found 7 or 8 infections, quarantteened them and them dleeted them; then ran full scan and found 2 more. Then after rebooting a popup appeared saying the computer was infected. So I ran the setup again, reinstalled Malwarebytes, did the update which returned a message that a higher number version 5505 or something like that appeared. then I reran the full scan and another 2 infections were found.

I ran the AVG from safe mode and it found nothing except for a bunch of files labelled Locked not Tested.

booting in normal mode, gets an AVG shield alert that there are numerous infections.

I also noted that even booting in Safe Mode yielded a popup saying that files were waiting to be written to a CD, but no CD was in place and there was no reason for the message that files were waiting to be written. I clicked on delete files.

I managed to get taskmanager open the last time I booted in SAfe Mode and for a couple of instants I thought I saw a file name appear and disappear 2 or 3 times in the taskmanager list of processes that looked like hpfix..exe or something similar, but then it stopped appearing.

I've tried using rkill and iExplore to kill the roque processes but they are shut down by the trojan. I know I'm supposed to be shutting down the roque proceses but when I open taksmanager I don't know the names of the roque processes compared to the names of essential proceses and so dont' know what to shut down.

I am at wits end trying to find coherent instructions for how to deal with this problem. HELP!

Richard

Richard, I can only echo what LOL already said, please start a separate topic and you'll receive help. You can PM me with the link when you post if you wish and I'll reply to it.

LOL, things are looking good here. :D Do you have any problems left?

UPDATE JAVA

------------------

Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 22 (JDK or JRE)".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.

  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.

-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.

-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Please launch Malwarebytes Antimalware, update it and run a full scan. Post me the resulting log.

Hi Elise

I've upadted Java as advised. Run full scan with Malwarebytes - nothing found, log attached

Computer seems to be running fine now with no problems

The only issue I have is a warning message that now comes up after booting - "Automation error The specified module could not be found" I've no idea what it relates to, but it has been appearing since ComboFix did it's stuff. Any thoughts?

Hi again, I think this is related to Symantec autoupdate. Lets run the Norton uninstaller to get rid of it.

Please click HERE and follow the instructions in STEP 2 to download and run the norton removal tool.

CF-SCRIPT

-------------

We need to execute a CF-script.

  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Start > Run and in the box that opens type notepad and press enter. Copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

SecCenter::
{17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF}

File::
C:\WINDOWS\Xlijuj.bin
C:\WINDOWS\Vxayituyihitam.dat

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Hi Elise

I'm afraid that didn't fix it. Still getting the same message on boot-up

Here's the OTL log

Thanks

Hi Elise,

The error message is just about the last thing that happens as the machine boots up. In addition to the small box in the centre of the screen (Automation error The specified module could not be found) I've now noticed that there is a small icon appears at the bottom left of the screen. The only option that the error message gives is "ok" which makes it and the icon disappear. Right or left clicking or double clicking on either the icon or error box reveals no more info or options

I'm thinking that this is perhaps nothing to do with the actions taken over the last day or so, even though it has only just started t o appear. The icon makes me think that it could be to do with a utility called Watchwan that I was previously using to monitor download usage. I uninstalled this a short while ago, but perhaps it's left something behind?

Hi, that helps. :P WatchWan has indeed some leftover entries. The following script will remove them.

Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"WatchWAN"=-

Folder::
c:\program files\WatchWAN

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

I'm glad to hear that! :P Lets do one last scan for leftovers.

ESET ONLINE SCANNER

----------------------------

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the esetOnline.png button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

    1. Click on esetSmartInstall.png to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png icon on your desktop.

    3. Check esetAcceptTerms.png
    4. Click the esetStart.png button.
    5. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    6. Check esetScanArchives.png
    7. Push the Start button.
    8. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
    9. When the scan completes, push esetListThreats.png
    10. Push esetExport.png, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
    11. Push the esetBack.png button.
    12. Push esetFinish.png
