You need to print out this three step fix.

Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the quotebox below into Notepad:

@echo off

copy C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386\uxtheme.dll c:\uxtheme.dll

quit

Save this Notepad file as replace.bat and choose to Save as type: - All Files then close the Notepad file.

It should look like this: Clipboard01command.gif

Double-click on replace.bat to run it. A DOS window will open and close again, this is normal. Please delete the file afterwards.

Next:

We need to create a batch file to run from the Recovery Console.

  • Open notepad
  • Copy the contents of the Code Box below to the notepad window
  • Click File -> Save As...
  • In the File name: field, type C:\runme.txt, then click Save
  • Close notepad

ren C:\WINNT\system32\uxtheme.dll uxtheme.old
copy c:\uxtheme.dll C:\WINNT\system32\uxtheme.dll
exit

Next:

Print out these instructions to use while in the Recovery Console: (This is for XP only)

  • Restart your computer.
  • Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start.
  • Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
  • You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press 'Enter'.
  • At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded entries, and press 'Enter' (note the spaces):

Type the following command at the C:\Windows prompt then hit Enter: (note the space between ...ch C:\...)

batch C:\runme.txt

The command window will close automatically after the batch runs.

Reboot normally.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete>File>New Task (Run...)

go to Command prompt by typing "cmd" in the "Run" command line and accessing the "WINDOWS" folder from here.

At C:\WINNT

Copy the EXPLORER.EXE by Right Clicking and paste it in the same folder. A file "Copy of EXPLORER.EXE" will be created in the folder. Now change the file name to your name.exe. For example, I renamed mine to "yourname.exe"

Also while your there:

Go to:

C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386 type in copy uxtheme.dll C:\WINNT\system32 <--allow it to overwrite

type in Exit

Next:

CHANGE REGISTRY - REGEDIT

Ctrl+Alt+Delete>File> New Task (Run...) and type "regedit" and press enter key. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon. In this folder, you will find a sub named "shell". Double click it and rename the "explorer.exe" to "yourname.exe"

RESTART

Restart your computer after making this change

With the first task, typing in 'cmd' in the 'run line', should it come up with a box called 'C:WINNT\system32\cmd.exe. The answers probably yes but the next bit doesn't seem to make sense when you mention a folder.
