Hello and thank you in advance for any help. I have redirect malware with symptoms similar or the same as other posters here. I also have several other issues with my computer, issues that all have more or less started in the same few days as the redirect problems. However, there are some other issues with the computer that have been more longstanding.

I have run several MSE and Malware Bytes scans. Some malware has been found, but the most recent scans came out clean, yet I am still having all of the same problems.

I don't know if it is helpful for me to describe the symptoms. I can do so in detail if needed.

I have followed the instructions in the "I am in infected, what do I do now?" topic, unfortunately not all steps were successful. No attach.txt log file was produced (I did a sytem search and could not find it.) I could find DDS.txt, but it seems that it is incomplete. The contents of that txt file is at the bottom of this post, in entirety.

I am confused at the Malwarebyte's log. It doesn't appear to be my most recent scan.

I have attached ark.txt

Thank you so much in advance for your time.

Hello JakeJae

Welcome to Malwarebytes.

=====================

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on OTL to run it.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

====================

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your desktop.

  • Double-click RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth Code, Files, and Code Hooks
  • Uncheck the rest, then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked and click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished then go File > Save Report
  • Save the report somewhere you can find it, typically your desktop. Click Close
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.

Note - You may get this warning it is ok, just ignore it."Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!

It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Kahdah, thank you for your reply.

All of those steps were successful, except that Rootkit Unhooker stalled while it gave a message* that it was getting a list of files and directories in C:/. It still seemed to produce a sizeable log. I've included that and all other requested information below.

However, this morning I accidentally hit "restore" on the 12 quarantined items in Malwarebytes. Don't ask me how or why - I wish there was an 'undo' button for this, but I take responsibility for my stupidity here. Anyway, I ran a full scan again, before I took any the steps in your post (I hope this doesn't interfere with the process set in motion.) Malware bytes found and removed 19 items now, as opposed to 12. (By the way, there was also one additional item I found in safe mode yesterday.) I have pasted the most recent Malwarebytes log in this post below all the other requested information.

*- the exact message was

"Please wait while RKU makes scan

You can stop scan by pressing "cancel"

Getting list of files and directories (C:\)"

You are welcome and yes it can take some time to run rootkit unhooker.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan or rootkit.

This type of infection has the capabilities to allows hacker to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identity Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you still want to clean it please do the following

===================

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Kahdah,

I am at my girlfriend's, unable to access my desktop. I wanted to respond with regard to choosing what actions to take. Please review the following information and see my questions below.

-Except for going to the links you've suggested in these posts, I have been leaving the computer disconnected from the internet, and shutting it off when not in use.

-I have changed my banking passwords from a clean computer and intend to follow the steps laid out in your first article link.

-I have reviewed your second linked article.

-I am and was intending to buy a new computer very soon (within a few weeks possibly.) I was planning on doing this regardless of the outcome of this malware situation.

-I also have another computer at home, so the infected computer is, essentially, non-essential at this point.

-As of a few days ago, I have backed up all of my data to an external hard drive.

-I believe I have the necessary installation discs to reinstall. I will have to check when I get home. Aside from finding the installation files and registration keys to a few programs I've purchased online, I should be in good shape to do a reinstall, though I have never done it before.

My questions:

1. It seems from your post that reformatting and reinstalling would be a more effective means of ridding this computer of the malware. Given that I have all my data backed up and assuming I have all the necessary installation CDs, is there any reason not to reformat? Is reformatting a 'last resort' just because of how much time it takes?

2. Can you provide a reliable link for instructions to reformat and reinstall for windows XP? (I have a Dell Dimension 4700, for what that's worth.)

3. If I were to reformat and reinstall, how likely is it that the bug would still be there? There was a thread here recently where it appeared that somebody still had the same redirect malware even after reinstallation!

4. Also, regarding my backed up data and my external hard drive - how likely is it that there is malware within any of those files? Would it be unsafe to put that data back on this computer post-reinstallation? Would it be unsafe to put this data on any other computer? I haven't scanned the external yet.

5. If I have a successful reinstallation and all the scans come out clean, how careful should I be with this computer after that point? It seems obvious that I should avoid banking or ever entering my credit card number in a browser, but could it potentially be unsafe just to do emails and word processing?

I'm also not opposed to physically taking this computer to an expert to have him or her do their best to clean it.

And I suppose another option is just bashing it with a baseball bat and never turning it on again!

Again, I am very grateful for your time and your help. Please advise me. I understand if you may not be in a position to answer some of my questions.

No because these types of infection can open an exploit on the machine that can be used by the attacker again.

Not saying this will happen or has happened but that is typically the way infections are done.

2. Can you provide a reliable link for instructions to reformat and reinstall for windows XP? (I have a Dell Dimension 4700, for what that's worth.)
Yes here you go:

3. If I were to reformat and reinstall, how likely is it that the bug would still be there? There was a thread here recently where it appeared that somebody still had the same redirect malware even after reinstallation!

If done properly then none.

I have reformatted many systems that were unrecoverable but neverever had anything return from a formatted drive.

4. Also, regarding my backed up data and my external hard drive - how likely is it that there is malware within any of those files? Would it be unsafe to put that data back on this computer post-reinstallation? Would it be unsafe to put this data on any other computer? I haven't scanned the external yet.

It is not likely that is was infected as this is not a file infecter but it would be a good idea to scan the drive with an uptodate antivirus antispyware before implementing any old data into the fresh install.

This only means for this install if you reinstall then the computer will be safe to do whatever you need to do with it.
I'm also not opposed to physically taking this computer to an expert to have him or her do their best to clean it.
I can clean I think I would fall under that category. :)

I am not saying we cannot remove the malware it is very simple actually I just wanted to alert you to the dangers of the is type of infection.

Let mek now what you want to do.

I'm sorry, my point here wasn't clear, and I didn't mean to imply that you were not an expert. The point isn't that relevant to our issue here, so I'll just move on.

It seems like reformatting and reinstalling is the safer thing to do to ensure the system is clean, so that is the option I will take.

The reason for some of my questions was because of your statement "your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted." I took that to mean that even if I reformatted, no there's no way to be sure it's clean. I think I understand now that reformatting properly is a pretty safe bet.

Thank you for the link.

I hope my reinstallation is successful and I suppose any problems I have during that process could be addressed in a different forum rather than this thread.

Thank you again for your time and help.

Wow, I should have done this a long time ago. It was easy to do, especially with DriverMax and everything is working so much faster! We can close the thread if that's needed. No redirect issues, chrome's working again, start up time is normal. Hopefully I won't see SVChost.exe running at 200mb anymore!
