MBAM Errors - Expanding_Variables (0, 9) - Missing_File (3, 0 mbamswissarmy.sys)

Recommended Posts

I have Malewarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 installed on my computer. My OS is XP Home Edition SP 3. My anti-virus, anti-spam, firewall, etc is Telus Security Services provided by my ISP. MBAM was working fine until October 21, 2010 when my anti-virus detected and quarantined and subsequently deleted two viruses. Coincidence? The viruses were Java.Trojan.Downloader.OpenConnection.AH and Java.Exploit.CVE-2010-0094.A. I decided to run an additional scan with MBAM when the following two error messages came up.

MBAM_ERROR_EXPANDING_VARIABLES (0, 9)

MBAM_ERROR_MISSING_FILE (3, 0 mbamswissarmy.sys)

I have uninstalled and reinstalled MBAM numerous times using mbam-clean.exe each time as directed in these forums. I have renamed the mbam.exe file and installed it. I have run different anti-virus programs (AVG, Avira, and SuperAntiSpyware) to try and cure the problem. I have run Check.bat and have searched C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers and the files mbam.sys and mbamswissarmy.sys are there. I have run Fix.bat and also ComboFix. I have tried all of the above without success. The above error messages pop up and MBAM will not run. I really need help to solve this issue.

I have followed the instructions and completed the steps as directed in the pinned post "I'm infected - What do I do now?" and am attaching the log files as instructed. I can't provide a Malewarebytes Anti-Malware log file as I can not run MBAM. Also, although I did not receive an error message while running Defogger, it did not prompt me to reboot the computer as stated in the instructions. I waited for one hour and then I manually rebooted the computer, so I am attaching the defogger-disable log file as well as the DDS/GMER log files. Thank you for your help.

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

Please run DDS again and post DDS.txt directly into your reply instead of attaching it.

  • Download the file TDSSKiller.zip and extract it into a folder on the infected PC.
  • Execute the file TDSSKiller.exe by double-clicking on it.
  • Wait for the scan and disinfection process to be over.
  • When its work is over, the utility prompts for a reboot to complete the disinfection.

By default, the utility outputs runtime log into the system disk root directory (the disk where the operating system is installed, C:\ as a rule).

The log is like UtilityName.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.

for example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.2.0_20.12.2009_15.31.43_log.txt.

Please post that log here.

I hope I'm doing this right by copying and pasting the DDS and TDSSKiller logs into this reply as I am new at this. Well here goes.

Hi,

  • Please copy and paste the following text in the Code box exactly as written into notepad (not wordpad or any other text editor):
    @color 48
    @echo off
    if exist "%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" md "%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
if not exist "%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" md "%allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

if not exist "%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" md "%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
    del /f /q %0

  • Once you've done that click on File and select Save As...
  • In the Save dialogue box click on the drop down menu next to Save as type and select All Files
  • Name the file Fix.bat (the .bat extension is very important)
  • Save the file to your desktop and double click it to run it if using Windows XP. If using Windows Vista or Windows 7 you MUST right-click on the file and select Run as administrator otherwise it will not work.
  • Once that's complete try running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again to see if it now works without error or not.

Hello Screen317

I copied the code as directed into notepad and saved as Fix.bat to my desktop. I ran Fix.bat by double clicking on it and then tried to run Malewarebytes AntiMalware, but am still getting the same errors.

Hi,

I would like you to try this:

Create a new user profile (ensure that it is an Administrator account). Then restart your computer and use that new profile to log in.

Uninstall MBAM from that new profile, then download and install a fresh copy. See if the error persists.

Hi Screen317

I created a new administor account, rebooted my computer and logged in under the new account, uninstalled MBAM and then downloaded a fresh copy. It worked and I had no errors. I then ran MBAM and ran full scans under both user profiles, the new one I created and the original and both scans showed no malicious items. Thank you. What do I do with the new administrator account I created? Can I delete it?

Hi,

Yes go ahead and delete the new Administrator account. See if MBAM still runs without errors.

I deleted the new administrator account I created which deleted all the files for that account. When I tried to run MBAM I got the same errors as before and MBAM wouldn't run.

This means your current profile somehow was corrupted...

I recommend making a new administrator account and transferring all of your data to it. Then delete your current account..

I know how to create a new administrator account but how exactly do I transfer all my data to that account. I have read an article from microsoft support and they say to hold down the CTRL key while you click on each file and subfolder except Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log and Ntuser.ini. Do I have to open each subfolder and click on each of its contents or can I just click on the subfolder and all its contents will be included. Thanks for your help.

Go through this folder and see what you want to transfer over:

C:\Documents and Settings\James

Copy anything you want to transfer to a flash drive or some other removable media.

Go to your new profile and paste everything over. Delete the old profile.

Let me know if you need any additional help..

Hello screen317

While I was in the process of creating a new profile in order to transfer my data to that new profile I was thinking how could have my old profile been corrupted. What did I do that could have caused my old profile to become corrupted? The only thing that I could think of was that I had recently run 4 registry scans with CCleaner. I always save a backup of my registry when prompted by CCleaner before fixing issues that may be found. I thought that maybe I had inadvertently fixed an issue in CCleaner that had caused MBAM not to run. So I restored the information from the last 4 registry scans back into the registry. I then reinstalled MBAM and it updated and ran with no errors. I then ran a registry scan with CCleaner and it detected 66 issues. I then tried to narrow down which issue caused MBAM not to run. So I fixed each issue one by one and between each issue I fixed I would check to see if MBAM would run and it did after fixing all 66 issues. So I am not sure which issue caused MBAM not to run but is running perfectly now. I ran a full scan with MBAM and it showed no malicious items. The only thing that I can think of is that CCleaner somehow detected an issue (false positive) in a previous scan and when the issue was restored back into the registry CCleaner correctly recognized the original issue (false positive) as a non issue. I want to thank you for all your help in this matter. I really appreciate the help you have given me. I believe that without your help pointing to the fact that my profile was corrupted I would not have been able to solve this problem if indeed you believe it is solved. Thanks again.

Glad to hear you managed to sort it out.

Navigate to Start --> Run, and type Combofix /uninstall in the box that appears. Click OK afterward. Notice the space between the X and the /uninstall

This uninstalls all of ComboFix's components.

Restart your computer.

Anything else I can help with?

hello screen317

Everything seems to be running fine except I had to reset my passwords for my gmail and hotmail accounts. I uninstalled Combofix as per your instructions. Should I now re-enable defogger?

Yes enable Defogger.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

I enabled Defogger. Everything seems to be running fine so this is my last post on this subject. I want to thank you again for all your help. The service that you provide is invaluable, and it's free. Awesome! I can't thank you enough.
