Quick question about AIM/Skype

So I got that pesky Anti-malware doctor virus which came with the google redirect virus which was placing rootkits on the infected laptop. I'm currently getting help on that, but I'm not sure where to ask this question -

I use AIM/Skype to text-chat and video-chat with friends and family. Is it possible that a virus can be spread through chatting via text, webcam, etc through AIM or Skype?

Also, I got the virus from a PDF file that I downloaded so I know it wasn't through one of those things - I just don't want to accidentally spread it to one of my friends through chatting on AIM or Skype via text or webcam. Would it be safe to use AIM and Skype right now or should I wait?

Hi,

To answer your question, malware does exist which propogates through instant messaging services; I haven't examined your case so I'm not sure if you are infected with malware that does that. To be on the safe side, I personally would refrain from using AIM and Skype until you are deemed clean.

In the future, ask questions related to your computer in your other topic..
