Update error

Recommended Posts

Hi -

Please follow the items listed below (should only take a few mins) and post me back the responses you get -

Here are some steps to diagnose update issues:

Step 1

Click on this link and let me know what it says. It should be just a 4-digit number in the upper-left corner.

Step 2

Please download and run the traceroute utility at this link. It will run a traceroute to our update servers to see if it can find the connection issue, and then it will write it to a log, and open that log in Notepad when it is done. Please either save the log as a Text File and then attach it to a reply, or copy and paste it into a reply, and I will forward it on to our server guy.

Note that it may take several minutes to run, and it may look like it is not doing anything for a few minutes. Normally it takes longer when there are errors that it has to log, but it's rare for it to go more than 10 minutes.

Step 3

Please download TCPView from Microsoft at this link.

This utility will monitor everything that is accessing the Internet or your local network. All you have to do is run TCPView, and then run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and start the update. Watch TCPView to see if mbam.exe shows up in the list. It will be pretty obvious, because it highlights it in green.

I need to know what "Remote Address" Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is trying to connect to. Once it shows up in the list, you can right-click on the line for mbam.exe, and select 'Copy' in order to paste it into a reply. It will tell me what I need to know. Below is an example of what the line you are looking for will look like inside the following code box:

mbam.exe:3656	TCP	vista-x64:52135	cdn-208-111-168-7.ord.llnw.net:http	ESTABLISHED

Note : if you are using Norton A/V please also list that (or list your other antivirus and Firewall programs) -

Thank You -

Hi again -

Your router and it's settings seem have been upset or hijacked. This will fix the problem. Please read carefully.

We can release your IP address settings, flush the DNS resolver cache, then renew you IP address settings.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Copy/paste all text in the code box (below)...to Notepad. (Do not use a Word Processor or WordPad).
    @echo off
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /renew
    del %0

  2. Save type as "All Files" fron the drop down box
  3. Save the Notepad file on your desktop...as DNSreset.bat..
Note : The .bat extension is very important
  4. Double click on DNSreset.bat to run it.
Vista-Win7 users: Right click on DNSreset.bat, select "Run As Administrator" to run it.
  5. A black CMD window will flash, then disappear...this is normal. The batch file will be deleted when finished.
  6. The IP address settings should be released and renewed and the DNS cache flushed.

Please reply with your results -

Thank You - :D

Hello HealthyAddict:

Are all these system connected wireless via router, if so connect one by one with Ethernet cable directly with modem to isolate and ascertain it's router/wireless configuration issue

Should you have any other question(s) please post back using MXyBj.png button

hello again. im on my laptop (first time trying this since i worked on desktop.) and im having this problem still. the desktop works fine now.

i tried the dnsreset from above, didnt help.

in a little bit i will try hooking up directly to modem and downloading the update, and post how that goes (since it seemed to have worked for desktop), though the desktop now has no problems updating and it is also running through the router (ethernet, not wireless like laptop)

any other ideas as to what i can do if that doesnt work?
