Malwarebytes won't update

Hey, I have been trying to update malware bytes since yesterday night after I got a tojan virus alert (can't recall the name of tojan) my anti virus

(CA internet security suite) quaritined it and I deleted it after that. I ran I full system scan with my anti virus and also a malware bytes scan afterwards and it turned up nothing. I tried updating malwarebytes database before I scanned and got this error:

An error has occurred. Please report this error code to our support team.

MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING (122,0,MultiByteToWideChar)

The data area passed to a system call too small.

I then tried uninstalling it and used mbam-clean.exe and tried reinstalling it and got another error when trying to update. I then did I system restore to the other day before my computer was infected, but am still getting the above error when trying to update. Weirdly both my anti-virus and malwarebytes (database version 4470) show no malware or viruses.

Hopefully someone can help me with this.

Hello and welcome to Malwarebytes..... it seems you are way out of date on updates or may be using an older version.

Please try the following to see if it helps:

Windows XP:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • NOTE: If you get SHGetValue failed with error code 0, that only means that the tool has nothing to perform, continue on with the next step....
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask me and I'll explain how to do it.

Windows Vista and Windows 7:

  • Click on the Start vista-7-start.png button and select Control Panel
  • Click on Programs and Features
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • NOTE: If you get SHGetValue failed with error code 0, that only means that the tool has nothing to perform, continue on with the next step....
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here

There is only two other things that I can think of, one is that I know that there is a conflict of some sort with CA Internet Security Suite 2010 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on some computers. So now I need to know if you have excluded the files for Malwarebytes from CA Internet Security Suite 2010 including finding out if there is some sort of web filter in your CA product?

Please exclude the following files from your antivirus:

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went.

  • 4 months later...

Thank you all for this great info, i tried every single step related to CA's 2010 security suite and Malwarebytes that i found on this forum site.

The final step on this thread is what finally got it working again.

I would have stayed with McAfee and not had this problem but Optimum Online / Cablevision gives its customers free copies of the CA security suite, figured i would save the $60 this year.
