I've been following the steps in " I'm infected - What do I do now?"

So far, I've had some minor issues with the steps that I just skipped over: 1) deFogger did not ask me to reboot the machine, but I did anyway; 2) I have no idea if I have any script blocker that needed to be disabled so I skipped that part of the instructions as well; DDS ran and I saved the two text files as instructed.

Where I've gotten stuck is on the step to double-click and run GMER. In doing so, I received these error messages:

1) LoadDriver ("C:\Docu..\m...\LocalS~1\Temp\fgwipoc.sys") error 0xC0000061: Access is denied. [had to click two of those to continue]

2) C:\Windows\System32\config\system: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. [had to click two of those to continue.]

3) C:\WindowsSystem32\config\software: The process cannot etc., etc.

4) C:\Docum...\M...\ntuserdat: The process cannot etc., etc.

Maybe this is a simple problem? I didn't shut down Opera or Process Explorer before running the program? Do I need to kill all running processes (including anti-virus and external hard drive) before running GMER? Any other ideas to get GMER to work?

Thanks for your help.

What exactly is your problem? Do you have any reason to use these the older Do you have any reason to use these older versions of Opera Browser? Some of them have security holes and it's dangerous to the security of your system.

Step 1

Please, uninstall the following applications:

  1. Adobe Reader 7.1.0
  2. Uniblue DriverScanner 2009

You can read, how to do this here:

Step 2

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Step 3

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

  1. JavaRa log
  2. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  3. a new fresh DDS log only

Borislav,

My problem is that often when I try to open programs or

documents, often nothing happens. When I click a link in a

browser, be it IE, Firefox or Opera, often nothing happens. Or if I

attempt to start a program, it takes forever to open, so I have

been wondering if there is something on there preventing my

programs from working. It may be something internally with the

motherboard since System Idle Process often stays in the high

90s when I'm trying to do something. HOWEVER, I have the exact

same problem on my laptop, which is connected wirelessly. I even

bought a brand-new laptop a couple of weeks ago and it also has

the "CPU doesn't want to do anything" problem, which is what

makes me fear I've become a computer zombie. I confess to

being bad about keeping Java and browsers up to date, but I did

have a reason for using older versions of the browsers, poor as

the reason apparently is. I'll agree to update Firefox and Opera,

but I did try IE8 and not only hated how it did things, but browser

performance wasn't any better so I went back to IE7.

So:

1. I uninstalled Adobe Reader long ago, since I only use Foxit

Reader. I did a search of all attached drives and the only

references to Adobe Reader were some shortcuts, which I deleted

then emptied the recycle bin. Adobe Rdr 7.1.0 is still listed on my

Add and Remove Programs, but there is no button to

change/uninstall, and I don't know how to get rid of it off the list.

Note: What about Java folders within other program files? (i.e.,

OpenOffice etc or programs that have a folder named "javaws")

2. Uninstalled Uniblue.

3. Uninstalled Java. Downloaded, unzipped, ran JavaRa. At the end

of the run there was no log file, just an error message "JavaRa has

encountered a problem and needs to close...."; however, I did a

search and did locate the log.

4. Deleted Java folders as listed. However, C:\Windows\Java was

not on your list; I deleted it, but it is still in my recycle folder if I

need to replace it.

I think that's everything so far.

but I did try IE8 and not only hated how it did things, but browser

performance wasn't any better so I went back to IE7.

Okay, but remember when Microsoft officially announce Internet Explorer 9 to update. Older versions are at times more dangerous than new, no matter what problems they have.

You should manually delete these leftovers.

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/400/kb400728.html

Note: What about Java folders within other program files? (i.e.,

OpenOffice etc or programs that have a folder named "javaws")

Just manually delete them.

Now:

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Am I ready for the next step? Thanks. This is great, because I feel like I'm attempting to do something about it with an expert to guide me along. I appreciate that.

Glad it's easy for you. :(

How are things now?

I've been trying out some programs as well as IE and Opera and things are somewhat better. Opera didn't take quite as long to open, but I noticed the performance graph on process explorer was filled with red for quite a while. Just about anytime I try to do something in either browser it takes up all of my CPU, except for odd moments when I can't open messages or get a link to work, as just happend when trying to read a message in My eBay or when I clicked a link in IE to open an email message. In both cases, I clicked the message and nothing happened. I tried out MS Word which opened much faster, as did OpenOffice.

Do you think we've done as much as we can on making sure my computer is clean? Should I consider it a CPU or motherboard problem rather than software or malware? I had run DeFogger before posting; do I need to re-enable my CD-ROM emulation software? I already know I have to update Firefox (which I haven't used in awhile) and Opera. What do I need to do about Java? Or am I jumping ahead again?

Thank you again.

It's not so serious. You have download some things that you should not, but ESET Online Scanner already deleted them. Now:

Please download to your Desktop: Dr.Web CureIt

  • After the file has downloaded, disable your current Anti-Virus and disconnect from the Internet
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file, then click the Start button, then the OK button to perform an Express Scan.
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click on the Complete scan radio button.
  • Then click on the Settings menu on top, the select Change Settings or press the F9 key. You can also change the Language
  • Choose the Scanning tab and I recomend leaving the Heuristic analysis enabled (this can lead to False Positives though)
  • On the File types tab ensure you select All files
  • Click on the Actions tab and set the following:
    • Objects Infected objects = Cure, Incurable objects = Move, Suspicious objects = Report
    • Infected packages Archive = Move, E-mails = Report, Containers = Move
    • Malware Adware = Move, Dialers = Move, Jokes = Move, Riskware = Move, Hacktools = Move
    • Do not change the Rename extension - default is: #??
    • Leave the default save path for Moved files here: %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\
    • Leave prompt on Action checked

[*]On the Log file tab leave the Log to file checked.

[*]Leave the log file path alone: %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\CureIt.log

    [*]Log mode = Append

    [*]Encoding = ANSI

[*]Details Leave Names of file packers and Statistics checked.

[*]Limit log file size = 2048 KB and leave the check mark on the Maximum log file size.

[*]On the General tab leave the Scan Priority on High

[*]Click the Apply button at the bottom, and then the OK button.

[*]On the right side under the Dr Web Anti-Virus Logo you will see 3 little buttons. Click the left VCR style Start button.

[*]In this mode it will scan Boot sectors of all disks, All removable media, and all local drives

[*]The more files and folders you have the longer the scan will take. On large drives it can take hours to complete.

[*]When the Cure option is selected, an additional context menu will open. Select the necessary action of the program, if the curing fails.

[*]Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the files.

[*]This will move it to the %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\ folder if it can't be cured. (in this case we need samples)

[*]After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list

[*]Save the report to your Desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv

    [*]Close Dr.Web Cureit.

[*]Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

[*]After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously to your Desktop in your next reply.

You aren't kidding it can take a long time to scan. How about days? I looked at the statistics tab a couple of times and it was working at about 34 kBs/sec. Wow.

A couple of questions. One of the files I selected to cure it and delete since it said something about a backdoor, which I thought was not a good thing; however, after further consideration I may have been in error to do that since it was associated with HP and I do have an older HP multifunction unit. Is a "backdoor" type of program used to communicate both ways between computer and printer? I may need to reinstall the drivers, if so.

Also, when the scan finished, I got a mesage (perhaps it is just a normal thing when it finishes) "Attention: Viruses have been detected during the scan (RC=133). The quarantine location is etc., the og file location is etc. etc. It is strongly recommended to perform a complete scan of your system if it hasn't been performed during scanning . . . ." Hopefully it is a correct assumption on my part that since I had just completed a complete scan that the message box doesn't apply.

I am including the DrWeb csv file as requested. Thanks.

For HP.

OK, I reinstalled the HP drivers. That in and of itself doesn't seem to have made any difference either way in how my computer is working. Things seem to be better, but I am still experiencing some issues with either a program either taking ALL my CPU (Opera being the worst offender) or nothing happening and System Idle staying at 98% or more. Also, I haven't noticed too much of an issue with using my laptop wirelessly as I did before, which is what made me suspect a problem occuring due to computer-to-router interference.

What else should I do to make sure my system is clean and operating properly? It's nice to feel that I'm getting somewhere with this.

Another thing unchanged is that it takes for-evvvv-er for Windows to load "personal settings," regardless of User account; i.e., the current account has 5 non-Microsoft services and 5 startup programs in msconfig. I don't even get a Start Menu button for a really long time to open process explorer, nor can I right-click the taskbar to get Task Manager, nor can I open any desktop shortcut. I don't know if this is tied in with the general problem or is something entirely different, but I thought I'd mention it anyway since I'm giving an update on performance. Thanks.

Please zip your C:\Qoobox folder and send me a link to download it via PM.

Now I'm in totally uncharted territory. I zipped the Qoobox folder. You want me to PM you a link so that you can download it. Where do I put the file so that I get a link to send you? That's the part where I'm lost. Sorry for the ignorance. :)

Open Notepad and copy and paste the text in the code box below into it:

DeQuarantine::
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\akebook.ini.vir
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\a3kebook.ini.vir
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\ANS2000.INI.vir
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\vf38574.dll.vir
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Internet Explorer.lnk.vir
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\DEVMGR32.DLL.vir
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\ENCAPI32.DLL.vir

Save the file to your desktop and name it CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. It may ask to reboot. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Here is the predicament I've gotten myself into now. I dragged the file as requested onto ComboFix. When it started, a pop-up message said there was an update to the program. I was not prepared for that and decided perhaps I should just use the one I had already downloaded since I didn't know how an update might affect results so I declined. The next message box told me that ComboFix would work with reduced funtionality. I decided that was even less desirable, so I went to the site of your original link, downloaded it, dragged the CFScript.txt file you gave me and proceeded to wait for it to start, which it did.

At the point where it said it may take a while to work, I had to leave. There was a blinking cursor at that time. When I returned to make a quick check a few hours later, it was at the same point. Nothing had happened at all. And that is where I left it. I'm afraid to do anything else because it might be the wrong thing. The CFScript.txt file is open on the desktop (I don't know why; I thought I had closed it before dragging the file to ComboFix) as is the command box for ComboFix.

So now my question is, what should I do next? I don't know that I can even shut down normally; I don't want to try anything without further instructions. Sorry for the further problem; I appreciate your help.
