Netbook infectected with fake security suite

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Last week I accidentally allowed the fake security suite virus onto my HP netbook while using chrome as the browser. I was advised to download the malwarebytes program, which I did using Internet explorer, as the malware has disabled chrome. The malwarebytes found a number of items which it removed. I ran it again ( and a few times since) and it shows clean now. I use CA security as the normal virus protection and that scan run after the MB one is also now clean .

However- chrome will still not work. I compared the settings with out laptop and they were the same so that is not why it will not work. Also in IE, I am redirected from time to time to a website daily consumer news, also the netbook is running slow, freezing up-sometimes seeming like something is using all its memory... I feel something is still hiding inside.

I tried to follow the instructions on what to post here, Please let me know if I post the incorrect info.I named the ark.txt file : gmrrootfile.txt since I had to close the instructions when it ran. I have attched it , along with attach.txt as zipped files. I also pasted two of the virus scan results.

Thank you for your assistance,

Robin P.

Hello and :)

I will be helping you remove malware on your computer. Log research takes time, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Do not install/uninstall anything on your computer unless advised.
  • Do not run any other scanning tools other than those instructed for you to use.
  • Follow the instructions on the order they are given.

Hi,

I have tried to use the combofix, but it seems to freeze up, or not work

I turned off the CA virus scans and the firewall as instructed. The recovery module did download as you indicated . The combo fix came up with a blue screen when I clicked on it and said ( paraphrased here) it was "scanning, that it should take 10 minutes, maybe double if badly infected." I left the netbook alone and checked it later, still had same message- for about 2 hours it was the same, no change at all.

I had to shut it off manually since I had to go to bed

I tried it again tonight- double clicked on the icon, it asked after a few minutes that there was an updated version would I like that so I clicked yes. It verified the recovery module and set a recovery point, then it said it was scanning , it sat on that same blue screen that said "10 minutes maybe double" for over 4 hours....basically frozen that way. It never did the things you said it would like blank screen or disconnect from the internet.

So is this normal- how many hours should it take? This netbook only has an 80 gig hard drive so I would think it would not take an extra long time.

Not sure if it is any different since it is a netbook? It runs regular programs, but it does not a have its own optical drive. It is very small.

Thanks for your help

Robin

Hi,

Let's run Combofix in Safe Mode

To do this,

  • Restart your computer.
  • Keep on tapping f8 when windows starts to boot. Do this before you see the windows screen.
  • When a list of menu appears, scroll to Safe Mode using the arrow keys then press Enter
  • Log in to your usual account.

Be sure to disable CA by doing the following:

Anti Virus

  • Right click on CA Antivirus icon near the clock (a shield).
  • Click on CA Anti-Virus > Snooze Anti-Virus Protection.
  • When prompted, enter in 50 and click on Snooze.

Firewall

Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner.

  • Right click CA Firewall icon -> hover (mouse-over) over CA Personal Firewall menue option. A sub-menu will popup.
  • Please chose "Disable CA Personal Firewall"
  • Unfortunately the system tray icon does not change, so if you want to double-check whether or not you successfully disabled the Firewall, do the above steps again and look for "Enable CA Personal Firewall." If this is the case, then you succesfully disabled the CA Personal Firewall Guard.

Hi,

Do you have your CA serial? We may be needing it as we may need to uninstall CA as it is interfering with our tools.

Please do the following:

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.

Download Mirror #1

Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    :filefind
    *wmiacpi*

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

--Next--

Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.

  • Be sure to disable your security programs
  • Double click on the file to run it (Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt)
  • A window similar to this should open on your desktop:
    mbrcheck.png
  • If you are prompted with options, enter N at the prompt and press Enter
  • Press Enter again
  • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your deskop. Please post the contents of that file.

To post in your next reply:

:)

I tried running combofix one last time this evening before I saw your last reply- and it worked this time!!!!!!!!!!

It was by the way the CA blocking it as you thought in the last reply. After the virus invasion on the netbook we had increased the security setting on all 3 computers to hopefully prevent future intrusions....

I noticed by chance when looking at the CA settings tonight - many things were blocked or permission required - I went through the list and changed anything that said "combo fix" to allow and gave it a shot .

Well after a few minutes it said rootkit activity found, rebooted and then continued on through 50 stages finally producing the log (zip file attached)

Did this remove everything or do I need to follow some more steps?

Thanks so much for your help :-)

Robin

Hi,

We still have some more work to do but the main infection has been taken care of.

Post the contents of the logs. No need to attach it on your next post.

Please do the following:

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Outdated Java javaicon.gif

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs):

Java 6 Update 7

This is outdated, and a security risk by having it installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall these older versions when you update, nor tell you that you should. Java 6 Update 17 can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts. Let me know if it does not.

Going forward, Java will overwrite existing installs, so removing older versions should not be required after this.

Once the install is complete...

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)

  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files

[*]Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window

Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.

[*]Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window

[*]Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

--Next--

Please be patient as this scan can take a while to complete:

Run an on-line scan with Kaspersky

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:

  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.

Please be patient as this can take several minutes.

  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
    Kas-Savetxt.gif
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

--Next--

Hi ,

I have completed all the steps you outlined in the last message, including the Java removal and update.

The netbook has not re-directed to the "sales" websites since the combofix was used. Also it does not seem to be going to 100% usage ( in processes) all the time. So it seems better. I have not tried Google Chrome again since I would need to re-install it.

I'm having trouble pasting here so I fill paste the scans etc in the next post

Thanks!

Hi,

Are there any errors when you try to copy then paste the logs in your reply? What happens when you do?

Try this:

Click on ADDREPLY button then copy the entire contents of the logs and post it here. If that won't do then please put in in Notepad then attach it.

Thank you.

Okay, the paste works now, before the right mouse button would not offer the copy/paste menu...only on here.I rebooted and now it works...maybe something to do with DDS being open??? oh well...

Also by the way today a Microsoft update kept wanted to download...after I did the DDS logs it did automatically download...

So here are the logs and thank you again for all your help!!

Hi,

One of those infections found by Kaspersky is already quarantined, hence, it no longer posses a threat and the other one is in your system restore. We will be clearing both when we're through checking for other infections.

Roxio's system rollback data has been infected and so is your AIM's address book. We'll both be removing them.

You are no longer using Norton? Do the following to clean up those services left by Norton:

Please download the Norton_Removal_Tool from

HERE

  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double-click Norton_Removal_Tool.exe and the removal tool will start automatically.
  • Note: Windows Vista users must right-click and select Run as Administrator.
Once the removal tool is finished, you will be prompted to restart your computer. If you choose to restart later, your McAfee product will not be fully removed until you do.
  • Wait for the computer to restart.

--Next--

Please do the following:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty in properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link - How to Disable your Security Programs

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::

C:\Program Files\AIM6\addressBook.exe

C:\System Rollback Data\Restore\Archive\00000063\00000064\0\Target\WINDOWS\ovurixuqu.dll

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Good Evening,

I followed the steps in your last reply.

I removed the Norton stuff... not sure why it was in there- never used it ! Perhaps it was a preloaded trial as part of the original software...

After that program ran and I rebooted, it keep popping up an MSinstaller ( preparing to install...) and the CA was acting odd- it would not allow me to turn the firewall back on. I was concerned a virus might have popped in while the CA was off so I ran a CA quick scan and it did quarantine a few things .After I did that CA returned to normal and I was able to enable the firewall again and the installer stopped popping up

CA does not seem tp produce a nice log like the other programs, but the two items quarantinedwere Bifrost and WinAntiviruspro2006

I then ran the combofix with the text box dragged into as you requested and that ran fine. I re-enabled the CA as soon as the log was ready

Here is that log. Please let me know what we should do next , and thank you again for your help!!!:

The version of CA I have does not let me copy the scan history detail. They just list the items and don't give any path info, When I mouse over the item quarantined it does give a small bit of info-

So I wrote it down:

Bifrost Backdoor software\widget

Winantivirus pro 2006 *\shell\contentmenuhandlers\shellextension

WinSpywareProtect software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\drivers\video\options

Should I just delete ( empty) the quarantine?

So far the netbook seems to be working ok again

Can I re-install chrome yet to see if it works or shall I wait?

Thank you again for all you help :)

Good Evening,

I was able to re-install Google Chrome with no problem last night and so far it is running great.

I also tested the mobile wide band ( the netbook has a built in 3G CDMA EVDO card for access if WIFI or wired connection is not available) That worked normally

Basically at this point it seems to all be back to normal, no redirects or systems being busy.

The only "odd" thing is that it periodically reminds me I have both MS recovery and Roxio Back on track Active. I could not see any way to turn off the roxio. The netbook came with that program....I don't mind just having the MS recovery active.

So, cleanup next???

:)

Hi,

I don't use Roxio and I don't find a way on how to disable it aside from just uninstalling it. Perhaps posting regarding this in PC Help sub-forum would provide more answers. :)

Let's do a little clean up before you go.

Delete the following:

  • DDS
  • GMER
  • Systemlook
  • MBRCheck
  • All the logs we've created.

You can keep Malwarebytes, it is an excellent malware removal tool. Update atleast once a week then run a complete scan.

--Next--

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Combofix_uninstall_image.jpg

--Next--

Open CA and remove every exception rules you applied to Combofix as there are infections out there that masks as CF and it is highly inadvisable to run Combofix without proper supervision.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article

Strong passwords: How to create and use them

Then consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe.

2. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

[*]Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

3. Update your Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

4. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

5. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.

For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002

Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

6. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

7. SpywareBlaster - Download and install SpywareBlaster. This program prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware and other potentially unwanted programs.

8. Protect your computer from internet threats with SandboxIE. This program isolates Internet Explorer from the rest of your operating system, 'sandboxing' it away - so malicious websites can't do damage to the rest of your system. There is a Getting Started guide on their website.

9. Some excellent free firewalls. Note: Use only one firewall at a time.

Agnitum Outpost Firewall

Online Armor Personal Firewall

10. And finally, please read these excellent articles:

Limited User Accounts

Malware: Help prevent the Infection by Sandi Hardmeier

Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing

We will keep this thread open for a couple of days. Please post back if you have any problems or questions or when you have finished so this thread can be marked as "Resolved".

Good luck, happy computing and stay clean! :D

Good Evening

I followed your cleanup instructions and also saved the the places you said to read about keeping safe from viruses. CA virus program is now set to update definitions whenever the netbook is tuned on, Also MS programs are set to auto update. We also have double checked our other two PCs to increase the security. I did remove the Roxio go back since I am more familiar with the windows restore programs that on on our other PCS.

Everything continues to work great on this netbook. Chrome is working fine now ( my preferred browser) as well as IE and firefox.

You can mark this one resolved :) :) :)

Thank you so very much for your help in getting the virus out. Your instructions were excellent, easy to follow and you were very patient. I am very very appreciative and will let everyone know that Malwarebytes.org is the place to go if they get a virus ( or better yet- to read up on how to avoid it)

Have a wonderful night

Robin
