To clear the Past Items list, perform the following steps:

1. Delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream values from the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

2. Open Task Manager, click the Processes tab, click Explorer.exe, and then click End Process.

3. In Task Manager, click File, click New Task, type explorer, and then click OK.

Looks the same to me!!! :(:)

Mine is underneath

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

The above was for XP. Don't have it.:(

Just for info, in case you don't want to have to dig around in the Registry every time to do this, CCleaner has an option under Advanced that you can check called Tray Notifications Cache that will accomplish the same thing :). You just have that option checked, and each time you use CCleaner to clear your temp files etc, it will clear the Notification Area's cached icons as well :).

Ah, thanks for that. Does that mean until I manually kill explorer they won't be removed? I checked that, but on restart they were still there. :)

This CCleaner feature has never worked for me either, just tried it again yesterday. I have tried restarts, close/open explorer.exe, in all manner of configurations but still no joy :)

Since I have XP I can use the wonderful PastIconsFlusher but this is NOT for Vista or Win7 users

Sorry, but I haven't been able to find a quick and easy tool for you early adopters :)
