Now I cannot update Malwarebytes on my laptop. Error message MBAM_error_updating (120070, winhttpsendrequest). Need help!

I've got the same problem. (My error message actually has an extra comma in it:

"MBAM_error_updating (12007,0, winhttpsendrequest)" )

I've installed MBAM on all 3 of our family computers. On mine it runs and updates OK, on the other 2 it runs, but won't update, with the above error message.

In case it's relevant, the 2 which won't update are both Dells.

Update. I've just seen the first reply to this topic.

My details are:

1. OS - Win XP Pro SP3 (one of the PCs has Win XP Media Centre)

2. AVG 9 free version, Zone Alarm free

3. MBAM v1.46

4. My PC has definition 4736 (updated today from 4700). The ones that won't update have 4052

Thanks for any help.

@ DeeGee7

you should start your own post. as so we don't miss you please. do thefollowing:

If you still have problems please follow these steps -

Here are some steps to diagnose update issues:

Step 1

First - Click on this link and let me know what it says. It should be just a 4-digit number in the upper-left corner.

This should be less than 4736

Step 2

Next - Please download and run the traceroute utility at this link. It will run a traceroute to our update servers to see if it can find the connection issue, and then it will write it to a log, and open that log in Notepad when it is done. Please either save the log as a Text File and then attach it to a reply, or copy and paste it into a reply, and I will forward it on to our server guy.

Note that it may take several minutes to run, and it may look like it is not doing anything for a few minutes. Normally it takes longer when there are errors that it has to log, but it's rare for it to go more than 10 minutes.

Step 3

Please download TCPView from Microsoft at this link.

This utility will monitor everything that is accessing the Internet or your local network. All you have to do is run TCPView, and then run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and start the update. Watch TCPView to see if mbam.exe shows up in the list. It will be pretty obvious, because it highlights it in green.

I need to know what "Remote Address" Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is trying to connect to. Once it shows up in the list, you can right-click on the line for mbam.exe, and select 'Copy' in order to paste it into a reply. It will tell me what I need to know. Below is an example of what the line you are looking for will look like inside the following code box:

mbam.exe:3656	TCP	vista-x64:52135	cdn-208-111-168-7.ord.llnw.net:http	ESTABLISHED

Thank You -

Your database version is way out of date, I know you cant update but maybe you can try a manual update and run a quick scan again to see if it catches any more infections. Keep us posted.

Manual Update of Definition Database

If you cannot update the database to the latest version within the MBAM window, you may follow the instructions below and update it manually:

ISSUE: I need to get the latest database onto a computer that cannot access the Internet.

SOLUTION: You can manually copy the database from a working computer using a flash drive or CD onto the infected PC. Our database file is stored in the following locations.

  • Windows XP and 2000
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7:
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref

You can also download a manual update from HERE -

***NOTE: This manual update will always be way behind in version level compared to updates from within the program.

**NOTE: Please note though that this should be a last resort and if at all possible you should attempt to download updates from within the program.

Once the system is clean and stable again you should update again from within the program.

Ok, I was able to get to the latest version of Malware by delete and redownloading. I am now current. there are still strange things happening with both the laptop and the desktop. Laptop has AVG and Malware and nothing shows up. I've scanned multiple times. Desktop has Avast and Malware. Use Firefox for browser. On the laptop, Firefox is slow to load and I see messages like connecting to "analytics.com", when waiting for my home page to load (MSN). When I try to log into my email server on Time Warner, again it is slow, and there are multiple messages (lower left hand) while waiting to load, things like clicksor.net, jsadonar. On the desktop, we keep getting commercials running in the background. I'm losing my mind. Any suggestions? thanks.

See this post here from the other day: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=64492 So if you want to un-uninstall, use a fresh program, a clean tool on the program, then re-install.. It worked for that user. The instructions are in post # 2 or below:

or if you feel you have Malware, you can go to the Malware Forum?

Please do the following to see if it resolves the issue: Post back and let us know please

To Fully Remove and Reinstall a Fresh New Copy of Malwarebytes - Read Carefully

Windows XP:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important !
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from Here

It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so, very important

After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

EDIT Make sure you can find your ID key & License to re-install that also Let us know what happens please

Also those Updates are way out of date, were up around 4791+ -- around Oct. 4th. you should have been around 4500-4600+

EDIT you never went to the Malware Removal Forum as said in Post # 3

EDIT 2

there are still strange things happening with both the laptop and the desktop
We may get this fixed, but you may have an infection?
