What does this error code mean?

Recommended Posts

I have a doozy of a trojan virus I am trying to get off my PC. It's the Microsoft Security Essentials Alert. I tried updating my Malwarebytes to see if there was a more recent version, and got this error message. So then I came to the website and downloaded the newest version directly from there. Saved it to my desktop and when I tried to run it, I get the same message. It pops up a window that says:

An error has occurred. Please report this error code to our support team.

MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING (122,0,MultiByteToWideChar)

The data area passed to a system call too small.

Can someone please tell me what this means? I've played around with my computer enough that I was finally able to get back online, but I know that trojan is still in here somewhere waiting to strike.

If you think you have a trojan? I'll give you instructions to go into the Malware Removal Forum. What does your Anti-Virus scanner say?

EDIT If you Add this url to the allowed/exclusion list of your AV program:

- data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

NOTE: We fixed a user last month with the same error!

Thank you for your help. Please bear with me, because I don't know anything about computers. I have not done what you suggested in the first post because I wanted to answer this first.

I had the fake Microsoft Security Essentials Alert/trojan on my PC this morning. It would not let me access the internet. I ran the version of Malwarebytes that I had, and it found about 35 infections. I followed the steps to remove them, but it did say at the end that not all of them could be deleted. I rebooted and still the Microsoft Security Essentials Alert pop-up was on my screen and it would not let me get online.

I pulled up my Malware and attempted to search for any updates. That was the first time I got the error code. I used my laptop to find a site that explained how to manually remove the MSEA. It said to Go to Start/Run/type %AppData% /Enter which would take me to the Application Data folder. Then I had to rename the 'hotfix' to 'hotfix1' and reboot my computer. Which I did. After that it directed me to download the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from this site. I did that and that is when I got the error message again.

Do you still advise I do what you recommended in your first response to me?

Lets play it safe and see what the experts say.... I will need you to follow these instructions, they will let you know if you have an infection and what the error is..

Please read the following so that you can begin the cleaning process:

As we don't deal with malware removal in the General Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forum, you need to start a topic in the Malware Removal forum so a qualified helper can help you fix any malware related problems/infections you may have.

  • Please read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here.
  • After posting your new post, make sure under options, you select Track this topic and choose Immediate Email Notification, so that you're alerted when someone has replied to your post.
  • One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.
  • Please refrain from making any further changes to your computer (Install/Uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc...) unless advised by a malware removal helper. Doing so can result in system changes which may hinder the attempts by a helper to clean your machine.
  • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version

NOTE: Please DO NOT post back to (bump) your topic within the first 48 hours.

Replying to your own posts changes the post count and helpers are looking for topics with zero replies. If you reply to your own post helpers may think that you're already being helped and thus overlook your post.

    • If there is no reply from any experts after 48 hours, you can reply to the topic, asking for help again.
      Or
    • You may send a Private Message to a Moderator asking for assistance.

Alternatively, as a paying customer, you can contact the help desk at support@malwarebytes.org or here.

Please be patient, someone will assist you as soon as it is possible.
