Hello,

So a friend brought me his messed up laptop yesterday to try and clean up the virus's and malware. I realized he had no active antivirus or antispyware programs at all. I have installed avast free edition, mbam, adaware and spybot s&d and none will work. The only scan that avast will finish is the boot time scan and it isn't finding anything. I can't seem to save a log file with HijackThis and have tried all in safe mode and normal mode. I have also tried running the housecall online scanner from trendmicro.com and it crashes after a minute or two. Currently trying to do a scan from pandasecurity.com. Any other ideas?

Laptop is running WinXP

Welcome to the forum.

It's possible that the computer is infected with malware that can't be cleaned and it needs a format and fresh install.

You can start here:

Follow this guide and see if you have any success.

Make sure you run both rkill and exehelper and then immediately run MBAM as desribed.

Most important....update MBAM before you run it.
