When you delete the rules.ref file it should give you an error, then you have go update MBAM so that it will download a fresh copy of the file.

Sorry I can't be more obliging :)

Thanks again for the reply. I've uninstalled using the cleanup application I found on the forum and reinstalled and so far everything is okay.

I had MSE set to do a scheduled scan (which I had forgotten about) and wonder if this had anything to do with it as MBAM went off when MSE was scheduled to scan. I've tried running a scan on demand with MSE and everything seemed to be fine.

Anyway, everything seems fine again and thank you for your help.

Great to hear, below you will find the location for the files....

Please exclude the following files from your antivirus:

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went.

@Firefox.

First of all, I should have said at the start I was using Win7 64Bit.

I had found mbamswissarmy.sys in C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\, just before checking back and reading your next post.

I've excluded the various items listed in the FAQ you linked to and also set Windows Firewall to allow MBAM.

I don't see how to exclude these items though;

C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll

C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll

C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll

When I open up MSE, these items are not visible, although I can find them in Explorer easily enough.

However, everything seems fine without excluding them.

I have put C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref in the excluded files and locations section.

Thanks again for all your help
