malwarebytes crash while scanning

Recommended Posts

Hi, I didn't know what was causing it at first so I made a post in the general fourm, I was redirected here after finding that I had a trojan and a worm. I installed avast and avira, and both ran fine and took care of them. However, I malwarebytes still crashes when it scans. I wasn't able to run the DDS because it said my operating system (Windows xp 64bit professional) wasn't supported. So I'll post my HijackThis log and rootkit log

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Hello ,

And :P My name is Elise and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I will be working on your malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you may have with your machine.

Please note that whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.

  • The cleaning process is not instant. Logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.
  • Please reply using the Add/Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic.
  • The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, send me or a moderator a personal message with the address of the thread or feel free to create a new one.

You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favorites. Alternatively, you can click the button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic, where you can choose email notifications.

-----------------------------------------------------------

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you have already posted a log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.

Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:

  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:

    [*]Save it to your desktop.

[*]Double click on the otlDesktopIcon.png icon on your desktop.

[*]Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.

    [*]Push the Quick Scan button.

[*]Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:

    • OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop

Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note - you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!

It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

-------------------------------------------------------------

In the meantime please, do NOT install any new programs or update anything unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem

If you still need help, please include the following in your next reply

  • A detailed description of your problems
  • A new OTL log (don't forget extra.txt)
  • RKU log

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Ah, I didn't notive the delay as I had classes all today untill now, heh. Anyhow, I was directed to this forum after I found out that my computer had a few trojans and a worm on it. My original reason for posting was that my malwarebytes kept crashing and couldn't complete a scan. After installing avast and Avira, it seems like they were able to get rid of them, but my malwarebytes still keeps crashing, so I don't know if they are just hiding or something else is the case. Also, I couldn't include the Rootkit unhooker because I got an error (error loading driver, NTSTATUS code:0XC000036B)

Hi, since you have 3 AV's installed as far as I can see, its likely things are not running okay (I see AVG, Avast and Avira). You should only have one antivirus program installed at a time.

Is this a business/institution computer?

If it is, are you the domain administrator? If you are not, have you informed your domain administrator, (business manager, Systems Analyst, or Information Technology (IT) Specialist)?

I ask this for several reasons:

  • There may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware.
  • Any infection could jump terminals in a computer network.
  • There may also be legal issues regarding any loss of business data that I do not wish to deal with.
  • Some people who come here use their computers for work, and the computers may contain the patient records of a physician or the financial records of an accountant's clients or credit card and bank account information of their employer's customers.
  • There may be tremendous risks and legal liability for such users for not fully securing the computer. We will not know this unless we ask. We do not want to be accidentally putting those we help in vulnerable positions for law suits.
  • Business factors outweigh technical factors in making the reformat and reinstall decision. Sometimes friends give missing CDs or lack of expertise as a reason for not doing a reformat and reinstall.
  • The cost of replacing missing Windows XP and MS Office CDs and getting an Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer to come in for 3 hours to do the reinstall and apply all the critical updates, is trivial compared with the potential cost of a multi-million dollar lawsuit for breach of trust if confidential client or patient information is disclosed.
  • In specific situations where highly confidential information about others is on the computer, and a backdoor virus or trojan is found, we are helping people more by identifying that they have a backdoor trojan which puts them in a particularly vulnerable situation and sending them to seek local professional help from a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer or Certified Information Systems Security Professional or Global Information Assurance Certification Certified Security Expert or Certified Computing Professional or Internet Service Provider than we would be trying to fully resolve their problems long distance.

AVG is still installed? Well, the computer isn't a business or school computer, its one I brought from home to school. So its now on the school's network. I don't know if it matters or not, but the "school" computers each have a network drive that each school computer can access, where the student computers don't have this, so I don't know if its connected to "the" network or a network to get to the internet.

The reason for there being three antiviruses is, I originally just had AVG, but it was preventing my browser from updating and I could find how to stop it, so I (thought, I suppose now) uninstalled it. Then I downloaded avast because I thought of it first, and this forum's guide used avaria, so I thought I just had those two.

The problem is, since you use a shared drive, either infections from your computer can spread to the schools network, or infections from any computer on that school network can spread to your computer.

You need either to connect the Network Administrator of the school to request permission, or definitively disconnect from the Network drive.

For now, I recommend keeping either Avira or Avast (which one you prefer). On a better look, I see only the AVG toolbar is still installed, which can be fixed with a script.

Ah, well, what I meant was the school computers (like the ones in the library) have that kind of drive, but the student ones (like mine and any ones in the dorms) don't. I'm not exactly sure how the computer network at this school works, but I think the network that I'm on is only for the internet, since I can't see any network drives from this computer. I only mentioned the shared drives because I don't know if they are on the same network that the internet goes through, but either way I can't access a network drive from this computer and can't get to this computer from a school computer.

Okay, in that case we can continue. ;) I see just some malware leftovers here, nothing serious. Please let me know if you have any problems left after the following steps.

OTL FIX

------------

We need to run an OTL Fix

  1. Please reopen otlDesktopIcon.png on your desktop.
  2. Copy and Paste the following code into the customFix.png textbox. Do not include the word "Code"
    :otl
    IE - HKU\S-1-5-21-1021736362-435774404-52729581-1002\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyServer" = http=127.0.0.1:6522
    O6 - HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer: NoActiveDesktop = 1

    :commands
    [emptytemp]

  3. Push runFixbutton.png
  4. OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  5. Click btnOK.png.
  6. A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.

UPDATE JAVA

------------------

Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.

  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.

-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.

-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Please press Windows key + R and type chkdsk /r in the runbox. Press enter. You will be asked to schedule the scan for next reboot. Type Y and press enter to do so.

Restart your computer and let the disk check run unhindered. Note - this may take a while. When done, please see if MBAM still crashes.

Really sorry for the delayed response (I'm only at collage on weekdays and I'm just getting back now). I ran chkdsk and MBAM is still crashing. I also noticed that avast says it crashes (get windows message saing avast has crashed), but it doesn't seem to actually crash (its still there on the toolbar and opens fine). It did this before the chkdsk was run, and I don't remember getting this message after I rebooted from OTL...Sorry for all the work, and thanks for taking the time to help.

When did this error start? Its strange since it doesn't seem file related, but more like a kernel hook (which shouldn't be there since Avast isn't even there).

You can try reinstalling it; maybe it gets corrected in the installation process. It might however have to do with Avast having trouble with 64 bit OS's.
