can't update

Recommended Posts

Here are some steps to diagnose update issues:

Step 1

Click on
and let me know what it says. It should be just a 4-digit number in the upper-left corner.

Step 2

Please download and run the traceroute utility at
. It will run a traceroute to our update servers to see if it can find the connection issue, and then it will write it to a log, and open that log in Notepad when it is done. Please either save the log as a Text File and then attach it to a reply, or copy and paste it into a reply, and I will forward it on to our server guy.

Note that it may take several minutes to run, and it may look like it is not doing anything for a few minutes. Normally it takes longer when there are errors that it has to log, but it's rare for it to go more than 10 minutes.

Step 3

Please download TCPView from Microsoft at
.

This utility will monitor everything that is accessing the Internet or your local network. All you have to do is run TCPView, and then run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and start the update. Watch TCPView to see if mbam.exe shows up in the list. It will be pretty obvious, because it highlights it in green.

I need to know what "Remote Address" Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is trying to connect to. Once it shows up in the list, you can right-click on the line for mbam.exe, and select 'Copy' in order to paste it into a reply. It will tell me what I need to know. Below is an example of what the line you are looking for will look like inside the following code box:

mbam.exe:3656 TCP vista-x64:52135 cdn-208-111-168-7.ord.llnw.net:http ESTABLISHED

Hi - To both with the problem -

Do not worry about an edit , we prefer to see all of the posting unedited - Just add more if there is an extra -

Try this - It is general solution that works most times -

You may want to copy/paste this to notepad as you will disconnect from the internet for a while -

1. Very important: First disconnect your computer from the internet. Just Log Off- while you reset the router -

2. Router Reset: Next you must reset the router to its default configuration. This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).

3. Reset the IP/DNS settings of your interent connection:

Download this Microsoft Item

4. Flush the DNS cache:

  • Click the Start logo in the bottom left corner of the screen
  • Click on Run or press Windows Logo+R
  • In the command window copy/paste the following:
    ipconfig /flushdns

  • Then hit enter and a black box will flash .
  • Exit the command window.

Thank You -

I am going to have to get some sleep now. I can't think straight. I was just looking through Control Panel and I couldn't find those things that you were talking about. I'm running Windows 7 BTW. Will check this thread again in the morning. Everything is working with the Internet for me except for a couple of Malwarebytes sites (version check and manual update sites don't come up). Is malware somehow blocking the connection? Got to get some sleep.

No - I just meant to log off from all internet sites while you perform these actions - The modem must be turned on to reset it -

You may have had an intruder that upset your connection to Malwarebytes - Not Uncommon -

I will check my Win 7 for these settings - (on the XP unit now) -

Thank You -

EDIT -

The M/Soft download will complete step 3 -

I understand. A while ago I did reset the router when my internet connection was messed up. I unplugged power to it I believe and then let it reset. However, I did not do any of the other steps. I may wait till later to do this as my phone is low on minutes and I may have to call Comcast tech support if the router settings get messed up. I remember that the router was a bit of a PITA to originally set up.

Would changing to a different router help?

I just did all four steps and I still have Internet (no problem) but I still can't get to the Malwarebytes site for manual updates or hit the update button inside the program. It just seems to be blocked in some way. I will try to get to another internet connection today and see if I can get that manual update. The original file that was a problem was called Ncizea.exe and it was not detected by Malwarebytes but by Prevx. Malwarebytes detected other stuff but not that particular one. I could post the original log if necessary.

It is quite possible that you have a root kit also that is preventing you from updating and HiJacking your DNS settings....

Please read the following so that you can begin the cleaning process:

As we don't deal with malware removal in the General Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forum, you need to start a topic in the Malware Removal forum so a qualified helper can help you fix any malware related problems/infections you may have.

  • Please read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here.
  • After posting your new post, make sure under options, you select Track this topic and choose Immediate Email Notification, so that you're alerted when someone has replied to your post.
  • One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.
  • Please refrain from making any further changes to your computer (Install/Uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc...) unless advised by a malware removal helper. Doing so can result in system changes which may hinder the attempts by a helper to clean your machine.

NOTE: Please DO NOT post back to (bump) your topic within the first 48 hours.

Replying to your own posts changes the post count and helpers are looking for topics with zero replies. If you reply to your own post helpers may think that you're already being helped and thus overlook your post.

    • If there is no reply from any experts after 48 hours, you can reply to the topic, asking for help again.
      Or
    • You may send a Private Message to a Moderator asking for assistance.

Alternatively, as a paying customer, you can contact the help desk at support@malwarebytes.org or here.

Please be patient, someone will assist you as soon as it is possible.

PS: Please use the "ADDREPLY" t_reply.gif button instead of other ones when you start replying. :P

Posting up my solution. Booted into Sabayon Linux using a live boot DVD and still could not get to the manual update site. Realized that it was a DNS issue. Plugged the router address into the browser and got to the router settings. DNS settings were static instead of being automatically set by the ISP. Changed the settings to "get DNS setttings automatically from ISP" and updates now work. Linux can be a good troubleshooting tool. Can tell you if something is OS related (like a virus) or not.
