Infected - Help Please!

My computer has been infected by some malware which is giving me security alert popups and disabling any .exe I try to run. Tried running msconfig and tskmgr but both quit pretty much 1 second after being executed( same with add/remove programs). I was able to run mbam once but without the latest updates since I pulled my machine off the network. Now it won't let me run MBAM again. It gives me a balloon in the sys tray stating that mbam.exe is infected (it does this for any .exe). I tried booting in and updating MBAM in safe mode but each time I tried to update, I got a BSOD after a few seconds. BTW I am running XP Pro SP3 if that makes any difference. Please help! Thanks.

Thanks for the reply! I have tried following those instructions. I can do most of those things in Safe Mode. The biggest problem I have is that I cannot update MBAM. Everytime I try to do so, whether in Safe Mode or not, as the update gets about a third of the way through, I get a blue screen and the computer crashes. Here is the last HJT log I have.

[*]Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Delete these files/folders:

You may have to enable hidden files:

Folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Ara ******\Local Settings\Application Data\hksqhmeld

Files:

C:\WINDOWS\asakumibol.dll

See if you can update and run MBAM.

If not........

Download and run SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner from the link below:

http://www.superantispyware.com/portablescanner.html

It's pretty much up to date but click on the update button to download the latest update before you run it.

Note: Once you close SAS the log will be lost, so before you close it get the log and post it back here along with a fresh HJT log.

Thanks again MrC. That seems to have taken care of the majority of the issues, no more fake antivirus warnings. However, if I leave the machine plugged in to the network, it immediately begins to send out multiple emails, so I guess there is an email program deployed somewhere in the system too.

Here is my latest HJT log after the fixes you suggested:

We recommend that you uninstall any Viewpoint products from your computer, check your control panels add/remove programs.

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

http://www.systemlookup.com/search.php?typ...vice.exe&s=

----------------------------------------------

Do you have any idea what these folders/files are?

C:\Documents and Settings\Ara *********\Application Data\Ceog\agdi.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\Ara *********\Application Data\Useb\hideg.exe

If not please upload the files to Virus Total for a free scan and let me know the results:

http://www.virustotal.com/

agdi.exe

hideg.exe

----------------------------------------------

If those files turn out to be infected which I think they are, please have HJT fix them also:

Please fix this one:

[*]Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:6092

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Fix these only if found to be bad:

Let me know, MrC

I went ahead and uninstalled the Viewpoint product. After I posted this log, I ran a quick scan with MBAM using manually updated rules and it cleaned out those two .exe files in question. Also, I had HJT fix that proxy entry the first time around and now it seems to be back. I have two scans with MBAM and one more with Symantec, both of which came back clean. Here is the log from the MBAM scan which removed those two .exe files. Still having the email issue.

ComboFix Guide

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon and choose disable/exit. More info HERE
They may interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.
Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

RC1.png

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

RC2-1.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.

3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please let me know.

4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

5.Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

I ran Combofix. After it rebooted, it opened the blue dos window and said saving log. As ti was doing that, I got a blue screen and the computer crashed. I rebooted again and it seems to be fine now, no more emails going out. This is the only log I found in the Combofix directory.

Ok, rebooted. I still get the selective startup warning and when I click ok and try to exit msconfig, it gives me an access denied error and tells me I need to restart.

This is the first time you have mentioned this????

Go to Start > Run > copy and paste in msconfig > OK > on the General tab > change it to Normal Startup
