IE hijacked & Malware gives error code 732(0,0)

IE address line has been hijacked when running in normal mode (safe mode appears to work without problems), no matter what is typed into the address bar, it is rerouted to "http:\\\" which returns and internet connection error. I have uninstalled Service Pack III, uninstalled IE 7, installed IE 8, ran MS security essential scan which fixed six malware/viruses, and am still having the problem. Just downloaded MW Antimalware dated 09/10/09, dbv 2775 and it will not update in either safe mode or normal mode, returns error 732 (0,0).

Any suggestions for resolving these two issues?

Thank you for your assistance.
