malwarebytes icon has changed into a generic empty icon

Recommended Posts

not quite sure what caused it. i recently upgraded my computer to windows 7 on a clean custom install. i installed malwarebytes and soon after the icon on both the start menu and the quick launch bar changed from the usual icon to an empty generic icon. malwarebytes still works and all, but the icon has changed, as I have described.

i've checked this forum and others. the one thing that seems like it might work is using ccleaner and clearing the "icon cache" but I can't find such an option on ccleaner.

any advice? thanks.

Hi -

I do not think you want to fully clear the icon cache (removes too many others) -

Not 100% sure if this will work , but worth a try - The MBAMclean.exe removes all reminders of the program and you install a clean version -

Windows Vista and Windows 7:

  • Click on the Start button and select Control Panel
  • Click on Programs and Features
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important !
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from Here

It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so, very important

After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Paid version only

Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.

Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now reset any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications.

You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask me and I'll explain how to do it.

Thank You -

Hi again -

My standard response to CCleaner install and use - Not sure if this is a help also - Did you have any problem with install of Win7 ??

I am just using the System Tools > Disc Cleanup on my Win 7 at this stage , with CCleaner -

Download and install CCleaner slim

  • CCleaner slim
right-click on the downloaded file "ccsetup234_slim.exe" and choose "Run as administrator" and install the application.
  • Keep the default installation folder "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"
  • Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS including your Web Browser
  • Start the CCleaner program.
  • Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run (basically the very top, uncheck it)
  • Click back to Cleaner and under SYSTEM uncheck the Memory Dumps and Windows Log Files
  • Click on Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.
  • Click OK to any prompts
Note, this will remove cookies as well so if you do want to keep them then uncheck them before running it.

Also please try running a FULL disk check on the drive and see if that helps.

This is for Vista but the same method should be valid for Windows 7
