Thanks to malwarebytes, got rid of security suite but have 1 more problem...

Recommended Posts

So thanks to malwarebytes I was FINALLY able to get rid of security suite (I think) thanks to this forum, and malwarebytes. My computer no longer has the security suite logo in bottom right hand corner, I am able to open and close programs as I see fit, and my computer seems to be running smoothly aside from the fact that I can't access the internet. I am writing on my second laptop, my primary was the one that got infected. When I open up IE, it shows "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", and I do not believe it is a problem with my router being infected as my second laptop works perfectly fine wirelessly. My comptuer that got infected was connected via ethernet to my router, and I cannot even access the router settings page through IE. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what steps I should take? Is my computer still infected and it just doesn't show completely, or did I screw up some settings while removing the malware?

Again, thank you for your help (Maurice Naggar)

It is a WBR-2310. I spoke with my cousin, who instructed me to go into my network connections, and check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". Apparently I had no DNS information in there, which was the cause of me not being able to access the internet. I know I did not change anything in there when removing the virus, so I'm guessing the changes were made without me knowing by security suite... Anyways, I was able to figure it out, and will definitely be purchasing the full version of malwarebytes. Would this be the only form of internet protection I would need? Anything else to recommend?

Yes, as to additional suggestions.

Your system has a antivirus program I hope. That is a must have. {remember, MBAM has no antivirus component.)

and that the AV is kept up-to-date.

Then, keep a layered security plan in effect.

Hello mamosley2:

Glad to hear that things have worked out and you plan to purchase Full/Pro version in which real-time protection, IP Blocking, and Scheduler will definitely enhance security, however, there is absolutely no security product out yet, which could provide 100% protection, it will depend on following:

  1. Keep your system completely patched that includes all installed applications not just Windows, a good program for this purpose is Secunia PSI
  2. Any good third party Hardware/Software based firewall (for inbound and outbound traffic control). Though the router you are using has an inbuilt firewall, just periodically keep change encryption key, besides changing login password
  3. Most importantly your browsing habit

There are couple of other considerations, but to start with the above would work. Should you have any other question(s) please post back

Edit: Please follow the post above

Security Suite is known to modify the following settings (as displayed by HijackThis)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:6522
