this malware is annoying!

Recommended Posts

k so my mom accidentally downloaded a virus on my sister's laptop. i ran malwarebytes in safe mode and removed everything it brought up. since we all use the same router. i think somehow parts of the virus got to both of my laptops. i dont know if this means something but i used a flash drive on my sister's computer to remove the virus and i constantly use that flash drive for everything. k well now both of my laptops have this redirecting virus that redirects my searches (especially to STOPzilla ads) and on top of that i have to rename malwarebytes to open it and it still wont find it after i ran it.

here's my HJT logs:

Howdy yoitspat.

Please keep this topic ONLY on this specific (paticular) pc. Any other of your suspect systems need to be addressed in separate topic.

Also, we will later have to get those flash drives looked at. Meantime, do NOT use them for anything.

You have an obsolete version of HijackThis. Un-install it.

Start button > -- Control Panel > Go to Control Panel and Add-or-Remove programs.

If you find HijackThis, then remove it.

Step 1

1. Go >> Here << and download ERUNT

(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)

2. Install ERUNT by following the prompts

(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)

3. Start ERUNT

(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)

4. Choose a location for the backup

(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).

5. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked

6. Press OK

7. Press YES to create the folder.

Step 2

Set Windows to show all files and all folders.

On your Desktop, double click My Computer, from the menu options, select tools, then Folder Options, and then select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.

Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.

Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Step 3

Download and SAVE HijackThis

Save the HJT to your desktop or the folder of your choice, then navigate to that folder and double-click Hijackthis.exe to start it.

Do a "Scan and Save log".

Step 4

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds here or http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr or

http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds

Disable any script blocker if your antivirus/antimalware has it.

Then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

DDS will run in a command prompt window and will take 3 to 4 minutes or so.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Step 5

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here. Unzip it to your Desktop.

========================================================

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

========================================================

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**

These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.

  • Click Yes.
  • Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt".
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.

  • Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log. Click on the [save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt".
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

Step 6

Please include the following logs in your next reply:

HijackThis log

DDS.txt

Attach.txt

GMER log

Do not use the attachment feature to place any of your reports. Always put them in-line inside the body of reply.

And tell me, if the hijacks are happening in Firefox, Internet Explorer, or both.

Also, please make sure to reply within a reasonable time. Do not delay your responses once you see my replies.

Quick reply at this time. Await further reply shortly.

Keep this Topic strictly for this pc only ! Any of your other systems need to be in separate New topics IF you want guided expert help.

Don't do any websurfing ! No searching, no online shopping, nothing. Just only this forum and the websites I guide you to.

and most especially, NO updates to any software or application while this system is under review here.

DON'T update Java or flash either. Decline any offered updates, if getting notices.

Tell me why this system appears to have AVG antivirus "and" Mcafee too?

Is your license to McAfee current or expired, or never activated ? or gotten from an unkown source

If never purchased (like a trial edition) or if McAfee license is expired, you must remove {de-install} McAfee.

The logs show McAfee VirusScan Enterprise

as well as AVG Free 8.5

When you have 2 (or more than 1) antivirus apps active all at the same time, they lead to deadly embraces (gridlock and LESS security).

De-install McAfee now if it is not purchased / licensed to you for this system. After, logoff and reboot system fresh.

There are also more pressing issues here, but first square away the AV mess.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

For directions on how, see How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Do NOT turn off the firewall.

Turn OFF Avast 5, and Ad-Watch and Ad-Aware. We do not want interference when this next tool runs !

If you have a prior copy of Combofix, delete it now !

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your Desktop.

* IMPORTANT !!! SAVE AS Combo-Fix.exe to your Desktop

If your I.E. browser shows a warning message at the top, do a Right-Click on the bar and select Download, saving it to the Desktop.

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

whatnext.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

Please watch Combofix as it runs, as you may see messages which require your response, or the pressing of OK button.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

-------------------------------------------------------

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once.

Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock.

The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled.

If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

RE-Enable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications.

Reply with copy of contents of C:\Combofix.txt

then await for my review, followed in my next susbsequent reply

Meantime, as I said, no web surfing !

You must keep Spybot's Tea Timer turned OFF while we do changes & look for malware remnants !

Right click the Spybot Icon (blue icon with lock teatimer-systemtray-en.1.png) in the system tray (notification area).

  • If you have the new version, click once on Resident Protection and make sure it is Unchecked.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
Exit Spybot S&D when done and reboot the system so the changes are in effect.

Step 2

Disable the options "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic configuration script."

To do this:

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."

3. Click "Connections," and then click "LAN Settings."

4. Make sure the check boxes for "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic configuration script" are not selected.

5. Apply changes & OK

Step 3

This system still has more than 1 antivirus program running actively. i.e. 2 antivirus programs installed & active.

Avast & AVG.

Having more than 1 AV active leads to deadly embraces & conflicts & is LESS security, not more.

I would suggest you keep Avast & de-install AVG. imho, Avast is a more capable antivirus program than AVG.

Go to Control Panel > Add-or-Remove Programs.

Look for AVG entry and select it and de-install.

When done, Logoff and Restart system for fresh start.

Next,

download and save the AVG Removal tool:

http://www.grisoft.com/download-tools

Now run the AVG Removal tool.

When done, logoff and Restart the system one more time.

Step 4

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista or Windows 7, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • IF prompted to Reboot, reply "Yes".

Step 5

I'd like for you to do an online scan. Please have infinite patience after it starts, and do NOT use system for other tasks while in progress.

It may well take several hours to finish, depending on how many files this system has. Have lots of patience. The scan and your security is worth it.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

For directions on how, see How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Do NOT turn off the firewall

Using Internet Explorer browser only, go to ESET Online Scanner website:

Vista users should start IE by Start (Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click and select Run As Administrator.

  • Accept the Terms of Use and press Start button;
  • Approve the install of the required ActiveX Control, then follow on-screen instructions;
  • Enable (check) the Remove found threats option, and run the scan.
  • After the scan completes, the Details tab in the Results window will display what was found and removed.
    • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.

Look at contents of this file using Notepad or Wordpad.

The Frequently Asked Questions for ESET Online Scanner can be viewed here

    http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/cac4.php?page=faq

    • From ESET Tech Support: If you have ESET NOD32 installed, you should disable it prior to running this scanner.
Otherwise the scan will take twice as long to do:
everytime the ESET online scanner opens a file on your computer to scan it, NOD32 on your machine will rescan the file as a result.
    • It is emphasized to temporarily disable any pc-resident {active} antivirus program prior to any on-line scan by any on-line scanner.
(And the prompt re-enabling when finished.)
    • If you use Firefox, you have to install IETab, an add-on. This is to enable ActiveX support.

Step 6

Start your MBAM MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware.

Click the Settings Tab and then the General Settings sub-tab. Make sure all option lines have a checkmark.

Then click the Scanner sub-tab. Make sure all option lines have a checkmark.

Next, Click the Update tab. Press the "Check for Updates" button.

When done, click the Scanner tab.

Do a Quick Scan.

When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.

The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Step 7

Re-Enable your antivirus program

Now, start HijackThis.

Do a "Scan and Save log".

Step 8

Download Security Check by screen317 and save it to your Desktop: here or here

  • Run Security Check
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the command window.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; close Notepad. We will need this log, too, so remember where you've saved it!

eusa_hand.gifIf one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Step 9

Copy and Paste (in-line) into reply contents of following reports:

ESET scan log

MBAM scan log

HijackThis log

Checkup.txt

Try it this way (to start Spybot and turn off Tea Timer)

Start Spybot-S&D, switch to the Advanced mode via the menu bar item Mode

then select Advanced Mode

On the left hand side, slect Tools

Then click on the Resident icon in the list

Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.

Now Logoff & Restart your computer fresh.

If this works, great. In any event, proceed forward with ALL the rest of steps I outlined before.

k so as i followed ur steps i noticed that hijackthis was no longer on my desktop. i followed ur steps before on safe mode just cause i felt comfortable that my system would be much easier to access through this mode. but for the steps you just gave me i did all of it on the regular system. so i did everything you asked and reinstalled hijack with the link you gave me in the earlier posts.

To what you noted at the top of your last reply:

It is important and desired to run most of the tools we use in Normal mode of Windows.

Safe mode does not give us as much flxibility and mainly it does not run everything that we need to see.

Hope my colleagues will excuse this over-simple explanation.

But the bottom line is, I will guide you and make a note as to when to use Safe Mode.

Otherwise, use Normal mode of Windows as we proceed.

First

Tea Timer (of Spybot) is active again. You have a very old version of Spybot (1.4) The current version is 1.62

Go ahead and de-install Spybot altogether. Use Control Panel's Add-or-Remove Programs.

Now Logoff & Restart your computer fresh.

Don't install any Spybot (you may if you wish, get it but after we are completely done & close this case; just not now)

The thing is that Tea Timer will block some fixes we need to make and actually revert the changes (in the registry).

Step 2

Start HijackThis. Look for these lines and place a checkmark against each of the following, if still present

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - 03402f96-3dc7-4285-bc50-9e81fefafe43} - (no file)

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [spybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Make sure your Internet Explorer (& or any other window) is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Step 3

Place your USB flash drives in-place so that some of these programs will be able to find them.

I'm going to have you get and run two utilities.

The first stops automatic use of the AutoRun feature of XP. The second will write to any connected devices a Read-only, System protected Autorun.inf file on all of your hard drives, and all connected removable storage devices.

Download and Install Microsoft's TweakUI:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...ppowertoys.mspx

Obtain and install TweakUI (part of the PowerToys for Windows XP package), and then start TweakUI.

Expand the My Computer branch, then the AutoPlay branch, and then select Drives.

Turn off the checkbox next to every drive letter to disable AutoPlay -- except your CD/DVD drive letters.

Download and run "Flash Drive Disinfector" by sUBs. It will do a cleanup of removable storage devices, and write a protected Autorun.inf file to help prevent re-infection.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/...Disinfector.exe

There is no GUI interface or log file produced.

Step 4

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop.

  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file, then on Start and allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, choose the FULL Scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow drweb.jpg at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look and see if you can click the following icon next to the files found:
    check.gif
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    move.gif
  • This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer to allow files that were in use to be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

NOTE: During the scan, a pop-up window will open asking for full version purchase. Simply close the window by clicking on X in upper right corner.

Reply with copy of the Dr Web Cure-it report.

On the reset of the Hosts file, that is ok. No harm.

The overall of last scan is decent. There were a couple of false positives (nircmd & flash disinfector). The scan found a couple of items in the Firefox java cache. The remaining items are not of importance.

Please do the following:

javaicon.gif

Your Java runtime is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • Download the latest version of Windows 7/XP/Vista/2000/2003/2008 Offline (it is the 2nd one listed under Windows and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586-s.exe to install the newest version.

  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup) javaicon.gif
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files

[*]Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window

Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.

[*]Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window

Small tweaks for Java runtime, since most all users do not need to load Java at each Windows startup:

Click Advanced Tab. Expand the Miscellaneous item.

UN-check the line Java quick starter

If you want to also un-check the "Check for updates automatically" you may:

Click the Update tab. un-check the line if it is checked.

Press Apply then OK. Close the applet when done.

To test your Java Run-time, you may go to this page http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

When all is well, you should see Java Version: Java 6 Update 21 from Sun Microsystems Inc.

Step 2

Please download and run the Trend Micro Sysclean Package on your computer.

NOTE! This scan will probably take a long time to run on your computer so be patient and don't use it while it's scanning.

  • Create a brand new folder to copy these files to.
  • As an example: C:\DCE
  • Then open each of the zipped archive files and copy their contents to C:\DCE
  • Copy the file sysclean.com to the new folder C:\DCE as well.
  • Double-click on the file sysclean.com that is in the C:\DCE folder and follow the on-screen instructions.
After doing all of this, please post back your results, including the log file sysclean.log that will be left behind by sysclean.

Older versions of Adobe Reader pose a potential security risk.

De-install your Adobe Reader: Use Control Panel's Add-Remove programs, Remove Adobe Reader.

Get latest Adobe Reader version

http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Be sure to un-check the box for Free McAfee Security Scan or any "toolbar" (if offered )

Sysclean scan result is very good; zero viruses found.

I need for you to tell me, How is the system now ?

One last HJT log for review. Start HijackThis. Do a Scan and Save log. Copy & Paste log into reply.

maurice, everything seems fine now. i used bing to search a couple of random sites such as adobe, malwarebytes, tumblr, facebook, etc. my browser doesn't seem to redirect anymore. i have a couple of questions though. i looked over my firefox add ons and i was unsure what these were : downloadUpdater & downloadUpdater2. also my metastream plugin (which i have no clue what it does) is disabled "for my protection?"

and when my avast trial is over. what program is best to help keep my pc from malware for free?

thanks for everything, maurice. your work is deeply appreciated.

here's that last HJT log:

I see that you are clear of your original issues.

If you have a problem with these steps, or something does not quite work here, do let me know.

Start HijackThis. Look for these lines and place a checkmark against each of the following, if still present

O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Make sure your Internet Explorer (& or any other window) is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Avast is a well regarged antivirus. Didn't you have the free version?

Avira AntiVir is also very well regarded, and has a free version for personal, non-commercial use.

If purchasing and budget allows, ESET NOD32 and Kaspersky are also very good choices.

If switching antivirus programs, then please follow advice in this article: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=33665

Use Control Panel's Add-Remove programs and

De-install ESET Online

Exit Control Panel.

The following few steps will remove tools we used; followed by advice on staying safer.

We have to remove Combofix and all its associated folders. By whichever name you named it, ( you had named it combo-fix icon_exclaim.gif), put that name in the RUN box stated just below.

The "/uninstall" in the Run line below is to start Combofix for it's cleanup & removal function.

Note the space after exe and before the slash mark.

The utility must be removed to prevent any un-intentional or accidental usage, PLUS, to free up much space on your hard disk.

  • Click Start, then click Run.
Type or copy/paste Combo-Fix.exe /uninstall and then click OK.

  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • Click Yes to beginning the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. Choose Yes.

We are finished here. Best regards.

hey maurice, while i was browsing antivirus websites like avira antivir and avast!, my browser was acting up. when i clicked on a link from bing to go to their website, it would open the page in a new tab for every link i clicked on even if i just went to hit go at the address bar, it would open in a new tab. it would also take forever for the avast website to load. let me know if this is just a minor malfunction.

i also checked the firefox settings and none of them seemed to cause this.
