Can't install update: MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING(12029,0,WinHttpSendRequest)

Recommended Posts

Summary: After installing Malwarebytes, I cannot run the update (click on Update tab; click on Check for Updates button). It behaves as though it cannot connect to Malwarebytes. (see details below)

Background:

Three days ago, one of my home computers was infected with AV Security Suite virus. I have not yet spent time removing the malware from this computer (I'll refer to it as the "Desktop") - I immediately disconnected it from my network and powered it down. I've had it on once or twice, in Safe Mode, without networking support (and always physically disconnected from the network). I plan to deal with it after making sure my other two computers haven't been infected, since the "Desktop" is not a critical computer for us. It remains powered off (in time-out).

I checked the other 2 computers on the network: both laptops. One is running XP, the other Vista Home Premium 64. Both Vista and XP are current with all updates. I run Norton Corporate antivirus on XP and Avira on Vista. On both, I use Spybot (Teatimer and overnight scan). Both have Windows Firewall turned on.

My first step was to install Malwarebytes on each computer, and neither one of them were able to update. Both stall during the update.

XP returns an error: "Update failed. Make sure you are connected to the Internet and your firewall is set to allow Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to access the internet."

Vista returns MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING(12029,0,WinHttpSendRequest), and instructs me to contact support.

I scanned some posts here and have done the following:

Reset my Belkin N+ router to factory defaults, updated router firmware, reinstalled network (renamed network with new name, changed all passwords/keys)

On my system running Vista:

Uninstalled Malwarebytes, shut down, downloaded and ran mbam-clean.exe, shut down, downloaded/installed mbam-setup-1.46.exe.

Tried to update, same error message as above (MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING(12029,0,WinHttpSendRequest).

Malwarebytes is allowed as an exception in Windows Firewall.

The laptop running XP also still fails (with message noted above for XP). I haven't tried removing/reinstalling Malwarebytes on this system (XP) since resetting the router

Antivirus updates and scans run every night (on both systems) without problem

Will greatly appreciate any help you can give me in getting Malwarebytes to update after it's installed!

Thanks in advance, Mary Lou

First - Please exclude the following files from your Norton antivirus and check if it runs a firewall

Also please disable the TeaTimer section of Spybot S&D -

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
    [*[C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

Note: If using a software firewall (like Norton) besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

Next : STEP 01 -

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Note: It MUST be Internet Explorer, not Firefox, Opera, Chrome or any other internet browser
  • Click on Tools at the top and select Internet Options
  • Note: If you do not see Tools, press the Alt key on your keyboard and it will show up
  • Click on the Connections tab
  • Click on the LAN settings button
  • Under Automatic configuration make sure that the box next to Automatically detect settings is checked, if it is not, then click the box next to it to check it
  • Click on the OK button to close the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window
  • Click on the OK button to close the Internet Options window
  • Use this diagram as a guide
  • Try updating Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again and if it does not work then please proceed to Step 02

STEP 02

Disable Internet Explorer Proxy Settings and Reset TCP/IP

It is very important that these steps be carried out exactly as shown otherwise the fix will not work.

If you have any questions please ask before moving on.

  • Please start Notepad and using your mouse make sure you select and copy all the information below in the Code box into your new document.
  • Then save the file as "fixme.bat" to your Desktop - The .bat extension is important
  • In the drop down box for Save as type: make sure you select All Files (*.*) and keep the quotes on the name as well. Then close the new file.
    @ECHO OFF
    reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyServer /f
    reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyOverride /f
    reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
    reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v GlobalUserOffline /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

  • On Windows XP you can double-click the file to run it.
  • On Vista/Win7 you need to Right click the file and choose Run as administrator to run it. With User Account Control on it should ask permission to run it. Click Yes
  • This will flash a black DOS box very quickly and go away, this is normal.
  • Restart your computer now.
  • Launch Internet Explorer and see if you can connect to the Internet.
  • Launch MBAM and check for Updates

Thank You -

@ Haider -

Please read the item below - (12007,0) is the error you are thinking of -

http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?s...st&p=227578

(12029,0) is usually related to exclusions , un/re install or LAN settings being altered due to an infection -

As the poster has AV Security Suite virus on one of the computer , the only other option is Malware Removal forum -

noknojon, thanks for your fast reply.

Summary: Unfortunately, I'm still unable to update although I followed steps 1 and 2.

Details:

I followed all steps on both laptops (XP and Vista). Made sure IE was set as instructed (I didn't need to change these settings). I reconfigured Symantec AV Corp Client (I referred to this as "Norton") as instructed. I have no firewalls running at this time on either laptop, other than the Windows firewall. After step 1, I still could not update, so I created/ran fixme.bat.

Fixme.bat behaved as follows:

on the XP laptop, it ran and generated a report (resetlog). When complete, I shut down, restarted, and tried to update malwarebytes. Same result as in my original message. I renamed resetlog.txt to resetlog1.txt and ran fixme.bat again. Another report generated. Shutdown/startup; again, malwarebytes failed to update.

On the Vista laptop, created/ran fixme.bat; no report was generated (unless it was stored somewhere that I couldn't find). When watching the batch file run, I noticed that the first line indicated "no entry found," second, third and fourth lines reported success. Shutdown/restarted, I did not try to run fixme.bat a second time on the Vista laptop.

Is it possible my router is doing something to prevent this? Anything there I should check? As mentioned in my initial post, I had already completely reset the router to factory defaults yesterday, and updated the router's firmware.

Thank you very much for your help and I look forward to your reply!

Mary Lou

Haider, so yes, I might have some kind of infection - you think??

I have already read and followed the "I'm infected" instructions; in fact, I did so before I posted, and I got to this point (see below):

||| Our program, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware can detect and remove most Malware with no further actions required for free.

||| Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

|||

||| * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.

||| * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:

||| ====>> o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

...then could go no further......which would explain why I posted (about not being able to update) on this forum in the first place

I'd already decided to purchase Malwarebytes, but thought I might continue the conversation with nokojon, who was very helpful and took the time to read my post - which is important since I had spent some diligently researching alternatives and documenting them here on this forum (such as restoring my router to factory defaults) before I even posted my first query.

So, if you want to tell me that I need to pay for a subscription to get useful help (like the help I received from nokojon), just say so. Your post count will still be incremented.

..About to become a paying customer..........
