all updates blocked

Recommended Posts

On Saturday, six computers in our house all started to experience the google redirect problem. I am assuming the virus was there on the machines and just activated that day.

We have tried everything to rid ourselves of this, including ComboFix per earlier posts.

Think we have had some success, but not sure, depending on machine.

On no machine though, can we update Malwarebytes. When trying to auto update, get one of the couple of main errors many other posters have cited.

We cannot even download the manual update. When you click on that link in Chrome, get message: Oops! Google Chrome could not find data.mbamupdates.com. In IE, when doing save target as, the file looks like it is starting to download, then disappears.

(note, says definitions on that page last updated 7-23-10)

We have been able to download/update many other AV programs. This thing seems esp afraid of Mbytes - initially, you couldn't even get the main web site.

I am not sure if I am in the right forum or not, and apologize if I am not. This thing seems to be going everyone, from what I am hearing from others.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello and :)

Since this is happening on all 6 computers in your home network, I assume you have a router. Looks like your router DNS has been compromised. I would start by checking your router settings..... (mabe reset router back to factory settings)

yes, that makes sense. but any ideas how to get the manual update down? Can it be emailed?

Manual Update of Definition Database

If you cannot update the database to the latest version within the MBAM window, you may follow the instructions below and update it manually:

ISSUE: I need to get the latest database onto a computer that cannot access the Internet.

SOLUTION: You can manually copy the database from a working computer using a flash drive or CD onto the infected PC. Our database file is stored in the following locations.

  • Windows XP and 2000
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7:
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref

You can also download a manual update from HERE -

***NOTE: This manual update will always be way behind in version level compared to updates from within the program.

**NOTE: Please note though that this should be a last resort and if at all possible you should attempt to download updates from within the program.

Once the system is clean and stable again you should update again from within the program.
