Reinstalling Norton, with MBAM active

Recommended Posts

Hi people,

I had Norton Symantec free from my Univ. employer until about 8 months ago, when I de-activated it and installed MBAM. I had a virus that bypassed Norton, and used MBAM to remove it. I didn't realize, until I looked into this forum, that one needs an antivirus program IN ADDITION to MBAM. I had thought MBAM took care of all.

Luckily, I haven't had any problems, but I tried to re-install Norton to use in tandem with MBAM. My university's website won't allow we to install the program, and I'm guessing it's because it's still in my machine. I fetched the Norton file from in my computers files, and it reinstalled, apparently, but would not accecpt all the updates. So I have Norton 2005 installed (there's an icon) but everytime I log in I get a message saying your Norton isn't updated.

Anyone know why I might be having this problem? Could the presense of MBAM conflict with the Norton update? Should I try de-installing MBAM (and would I have a problem reinstalling it later, as I did pay for it, and not sure I can locate the account numbers/passwords.

Thanks for any ideas!

Welcome stereoken -

Due to the age and lack of response from your Norton I would Fully Remove it now - It will be almost useless -

Your best bets are as follows -

First Fully remove Norton - There should be an Uninstall section for it -

Next check the email account you normally use to find the email from Cleverbridge with your ID and Key for Malwarebytes -

Save the ID and Key in notepad (copy and paste it) , or a similar program so it is not lost -

If you have deleted the email we can always get the original ID and Key for you -

Now install another Antivirus program (I use M/soft Security Essentials - Free and very good) - A direct link is HERE -

Once you do those items please post back if you need any more help -

Thank You -

Many thanks!

I uninstalled the Norton AV, and installed Microsoft Security Essentials as was suggested. (I also located my ID numbers).

But, when I try to install the updates that are required, after a while of "downloading" it will give back a message that the download has failed, and to make sure you are connected to the internet. But in fact I am connected.

Should I try uninstalling MBAM, then try again?

Hi again -

If you wish to Un/Re Install the program for any reason the directions are listed below -

As you have not listed your Operating System (XP Vista Win7) I have left all versions for you to follow - Pick yours -

Your copy of MBAM may have been corrupted in some way , so I do this every few months to ensure mine is OK -

To Fully Remove and Reinstall a Fresh New Copy of Malwarebytes - Read Carefully

Windows XP:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important !
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from Here

It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so, very important

After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Windows Vista and Windows 7:

  • Click on the Start button and select Control Panel
  • Click on Programs and Features
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important !
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from Here

It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so, very important

After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Paid version only

Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.

Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now reset any file exclusions as may be required in your

Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications.

You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask me and I'll explain how to do it.

Thank You - :)
