Unable to view scan results

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I earlier managed to come upon a virus, so I bought Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, it was all going well and I registered it and everything, then I started a full scan and it was coming up with up to 30 'Objects Infected'. Then when the scan completed a box popped up saying it had done so and that I should check my results or some such, so I clicked OK and then before I could click to view the results the program just closed without warning or error code or anything. I repeated the scan 2 more times and every time the box poppped up afted the scan was completed, and regardless of whether I clicked OK, just exited the box, the program closed down. I thought it might just temporarily of closed before the results came up, so I waited but 45 minutes later there were still no results.

If it helps, from what I can find the virus is similar to 'Antivirus 2009' but an updated version, it at first repeatedly tried to warn me about viruses etc. and asking me to upgrade to the full version to get rid of it, then saying that it had found a virus and that I should delete something along the lines of System32/control, which I figured was important so I didn't. It also placed a bunch of spam and porn on my desktop, I got rid of most of it by the look of things but now I just have an advert popping up in internet explorer every 5 minutes. I could just delete IE since I use Firefox, but it wont let me do that for some reason.

A 'dummies guide' would be appreciated as I'm not particularly great with computers.

Thanks,

Mikey

Hello Mikeyninja and welcome to MalwareBytes forums.

Good writeup and notes. But not one word stated about the vesrion / edition of Windows ! ? ! For your benefit, and others, that is an important piece of information for your helper to know ! Otherwise, we start off with a guess.

Start with the following and do not make any changes at all without checking here first.

Step 1

1. Go >> Here << and download ERUNT

(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)

2. Install ERUNT by following the prompts

(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)

3. Start ERUNT

(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)

4. Choose a location for the backup

(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).

5. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked

6. Press OK

7. Press YES to create the folder.

Step 2

Set Windows to show all files and all folders.

On your Desktop, double click My Computer, from the menu options, select tools, then Folder Options, and then select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.

Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.

Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Step 3

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista or Windows 7, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • IF prompted to Reboot, reply "Yes".

Download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here. Unzip it to your Desktop.

========================================================

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

========================================================

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**

These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.

  • Click Yes.
  • Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt".
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.

  • Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log. Click on the [save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt".
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

Download Security Check by screen317 and save it to your Desktop: here or here

  • Run Security Check
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the command window.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; close Notepad. We will need this log, too, so remember where you've saved it!

eusa_hand.gifIf one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Then copy/paste the following into your post (in order):

  • the contents of Log.txt
  • the contents of Info.txt
  • the contents of GMER.txt
  • the contents of checkup.txt

Be sure to do a Preview prior to pressing Submit because all reports may not fit into 1 single reply. You may have to do more than 1 reply.

Do not use the attachment feature to place any of your reports. Always put them in-line inside the body of reply.
