Thank you in advance for your help!

In the process of working on this, I ran MBAM, Spybot, and SuperAntiSpyware. My normal antivirus program was McAfee.

First off you need to disable the TEA TIMER from Spybot

Instructions on how to disable the Spybot Search & Destroy Tea Timer

Disable Spybot Search & Destroys' TEA TIMER:

  1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
  2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
  3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
  4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
  5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
  6. Restart your computer.

Next

Panda finds this file to be adware/spyware c:\windows\system32\a.exe

Start Malwarebytes and go to the More Tools tab. There you'll find a button named Run Tool to run FileASSISSIN.

Then browse to c:\windows\system32\a.exe and select that file and click OK, then Yes to remove it.

Next

Then you need to Empty your Recycle Bin which contains remnants of Malware.

Next

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 7.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be on your desktop or where you downloaded it to, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Next

You're running a very old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. You should uninstall it and download and install the latest version from http://www.adobe.com

Next

Update Malwarebytes via the UPDATE tab again and do another Quick Scan.

Next

Then run another HJT scan and post back the MB and HJT log for review again.

How is your system running now? I don't see anything obvious in the logs to indicate any infection.

You should update your other scanners and antivirus and do a full scan with McAfee and your other scanners and let me know if they find anything and we can go from there.

Thanks.

Thanks, seems to be running pretty good now. I will run those scans and post back what I find.

Okay great. Hopefully you're clean now and just need to put some tools in place to help prevent future infections.

Post back when you're ready.

Thanks! Ok, macafee and superantispyware found only some new tracking cookies from recent surfing, MalwareBytes nothing. Here is the latter plus hijack this:

Aside from a piece of Java still remaining here in the logs: C:\Sun\SDK\jdk\bin\javaw.exe your logs look good and show no signs of infection.

Please review your Add/Remove in Control Panel and look for everything related to Java and remove it. Then delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java and reboot your computer. Then go and update your Java.

Update Java Runtime

  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be on your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Then once that is done you look like you should be good to go and now need to follow the directions below.

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • Check Turn off System Restore.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy

Download it from
here
. Just choose a mirror and off you go.

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly
here

Install SpyWare Blaster.

Download it from
here

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster
here

Install WinPatrol

Download it from
here

Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works
here

Install FireTrust SiteHound

You can find information and download it from
here

Install MVPS Hosts File

from here

The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

You can find a tutorial here :
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Note:

You are running Windows XP
SP2
, you should upgrade to
SP3
.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must. I recommend

This thread is about to close, so let again say THANKS! I did also add noScript on firefox as you suggested, I like it a lot. On Java, I had gone ahead and installed Java Enterprise Edition SDK 5 and removed 3 completely when you asked, so hopefully the javaw.exe file is a more updated one. It is dated 8/29/08, at least. Will do the other things you mention, and also will be upgrading my MalwareBytes software to the paid version.
