Distribution List

I get an error message "an unexpected error has occured" when attempting to send to a distribution list. The microsoft tech guy suggested this is caused by the AV software and I should disable the scan of outgoing emails. 1) disabling any scan function seems a bit aggresive to me, but I will do it if it allows me to send to my lists; 2) If this is truly the "fix", how do I disable that feature? If it is not obvious, I am a novice.
