MBAM error msg

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I have MBAM version 1.46 installed on my system, and have been using the program-(in previous versions) since June 2009 with virtually no problems to speak of. I'm running it in conjunction with McAfee Security Center, which I've also had for the past couple of years, so there has been no appreciable problem between the two. I'm running Vista 64-bit Home Premium Version 6/SP2 Dell XPS420 2.40Ghz 6GB-RAM. As of yesterday, when I booted up windows, everything loaded okay, until a small error window for MBAM came up;

[Open Event] Failed to Perform desired action Error Code 2

I closed that window out, and clicked on my MBAM shortcut icon on the desktop, however it took almost 2 minutes to display the Vista UAC window for that program-(which is normal when I've opened it that way, although way too slow this time for the UAC window). Upon clicking on "continue" on that UAC window, MBAM immmediately displays on my screen, and upon checking under the "protection" tab for the program, I find that the box next to " Enable protection module" had somehow become unchecked. I checked the box, and MBAM instantly advised me it was up and running and protecting my system. *It also then also immediately displayed the MBAM icon on my taskbar-(*same hadn't displayed till then during boot-up since Windows had the problem loading it in the first place). My desktop dock-(familiar to Vista users), then finally loaded on my desktop as well. After this it appears everything is working okay, all my programs work fine. If I do a Windows restart-(after having clicked that box to turn on MBAM's prot'n module), everything loads okay, although the whole boot-up takes a couple minutes longer than what I've noticed in the past). This morning a did a cold boot-up-(with computer off all night), and same error msg for MBAM I initially got yesterday displayed again. Again, I opened up MBAM thru shortcut icon, found the protection module box again unchecked, clicked same, and it corrected it, as I previously described. I have not made any significant changes, just regular windows updates-(set on automatic), and my security programs are all set to update automatically as well. I tried Windows restore point yesterday before I discovered the MBAM prot'n module was unchecked, and this didn't correct it at that time. It appears somehow Windows is missing a file or two that enables it to load MBAM during boot-up. I also ran MBAM scans-(all various type scans it provides), and did a 3-hr full scan with my McAfee Security Ctr, and neither found anything malicious whatever, so I thinking something is missing to properly load the program, rather than malware or a virus. Reading some of the other posts under "Errors" in this forum detail a file missing is apparently the problem. I am not a computer novice, nor am I an expert, somewhere in between. Any help would be appreciated. As I stated, this occurred rather suddenly w/o any forewarning of oncoming problems. Thanks for any help!

Please try the following to see if it helps:

Windows Vista and Windows 7:

  • Click on the Start vista-7-start.png button and select Control Panel
  • Click on Programs and Features
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • NOTE: If you get SHGetValue failed with error code 0, that only means that the tool has nothing to perform, continue on with the next step....
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask me and I'll explain how to do it.

Okay, thanks for the possible fix, I was considering uninstalling the program, which is always tricky, due to there usually being something left of the program after a regular uninstall. I will try this procedure this evening and get back with this forum if that doesn't work.

I tried your solution/procedure a couple hours ago, and it apparently worked, during the last windows restart listed in your procedure, my monitor screen stayed black for several minutes-(about 6-7 minutes) after I logged back in, before it displayed the desktop. I was very concerned up to that point, but then the desktop appeared. MBAM was displayed on the taskbar, and it's protection module was turned on. I had shut down my McAfee A/V as you advised during the re-installation of the MBAM software, but after the desktop came on, I noticed my McAfee Sec'y Ctr had turned all its programs back on. Here about 20 minutes ago, I did a cold boot-up of Windows-(after complete computer shutdown, no restart), and Windows loaded normally, desktop came rt up in a normal fashion, but it took approx 7 minutes total-(*I timed it), for the complete loading of all my programs. McAfee took 5 minutes-(about 2 minutes slower from recent past, and MBAM and Vista Desktop-Dock took close to 7 minutes-(usually MBAM takes 4-5). After that time, I checked MBAM, and the protection module feature was properly checked and all its features were enabled. The program was running and blocking malicious websites-(even though I didn't have my browser activated), which is entirely normal-(*I have MBAM always set to display the small balloon prompts advising me a site was blocked, just so I know its working, even if I'm not running my web-browser. If this is consistent, I don't mind a few extra minutes loading the programs, although I'd prefer McAfee and MBAM load sooner. I seem to recall Windows can be configured or the programs themselves to not boot up with Windows-(*I'd leave McAfee & MBAM alone regards this, as I want them to load when Windows boots up). I have a few programs that are not essential-(Dell Data-Safe Online, etc), that I never or rarely use, such as my Logitech webcam, that I could possibly change to not loading when Windows boots up. Any thoughts on this? By the way my system is slightly less than 2 years old-(computer, monitor, etc), so they are still in very good shape. Again, thanks for your assistance!

Good to hear you got it working..... there is a know issue with McAfee and Malwarebytes working together on some computer. What version of McAfee are you using? There are ways to delay your startup of Malwarebytes, but it be best to contact support for that and provide them with your cleaverbrige order number and they can help you with that.

If you are getting popups from Malwarebytes about blocking sites even though your browser is not on, then you may either have P2P software running or may have an infection.

Also to help avoid the slow boot up process, you can add exceptions into your McAfee for the Malwarebytes files as listed below....

Please exclude the following files from your antivirus:

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went.

I spoke too soon about your posted procedure correcting the problem. I did another cold-start with Windows a few hours later in the evening-(no restart, computer was completely shut down 1st), to test my system one more time before I went to bed. Windows and desktop came up fine and in the normal loading time I'm used to, Mcafee loaded rt away, however while waiting for MBAM to load-(and appear on my taskbar), I got the same original error msg I initially described to you. [Open Event] Failed to perform desired action Error Code 2. I clicked on the MBAM shortcut icon, and instead of the UAC window coming up rt away, it took about 3 add'l minutes to display that. After it did, I clicked on "continue", and MBAM then loaded-(program window came up on the screen, and the icon for MBAM appeared on the taskbar at this time. *I also notice the Vista desktop dock-(which also hadn't loaded yet), then appeared at the same time on the desktop. I checked the protection tab in MBAM, and sure enough, it was unchecked again where it advises to enable the protection module. As soon as I check that box to enable the module, MBAM adv's me at that time it is up and running and protecting my system. The earlier 1st cold-start test had Mcafee not loading till about 5 minutes into the boot-up, and MBAM & Vista desktop-dock not loading till 7 minutes into the boot-up. I'm not really familiar with P2P, although I've heard of it, when you mention I'm either running P2P software or have an infection. I've been using this set-up with McAfee and MBAM for quite some time now-(over a year), and w/o any appreciable problems in that time like this. Both programs are updated constantly, so I wouldn't think I have an infection, as my system has performed very well up till yesterday, with no slow-downs, erratic loading, etc, but with malware and viruses, one can never be completely safe. My version of McAfee Security Ctr is; Ver; 10.5, with the included programs in same being; Virus-Scan ver; 14.5, Firewall ver; 11.5 and Anti-Spam ver; 11.5. You may have misunderstood that I didn't want to delay MBAM loading, I wanted it to load quicker-(back up to normal loading time before this problem occurred, about 3-4 minutes into boot-up). I can try and exclude those specific files you listed in my McAfee A/V and McAfee Firewall. Appreciate the ongoing assistance, I thought earlier I had the problem licked, but apparently not.

Please get me a copy of the protection log from a day you experienced this error:

1) Open Malwarebytes' Anti-malware.

2) Click on the 'Logs' tab.

3) Look for the 'protection' log from a day you had the issue (logs are sorted in order by date).

4) Double-click on the log in the list, and it will open.

5) Copy and paste the contents into a reply. If you do not know how to copy and paste, then here is a link to instructions:

Since I uninstalled MBAM yesterday, I lost all the protection logs up to that time-(*1st noticed the problem Sunday morning, 8-8-2010), so I only have 3 logs stored on the new install, I've attached the 2nd one, dated 8-9-2010. I will send the other two in separate replies. Thanks for the help!

This one is last of 3 new logs in the reinstalled MBAM, that I did early this AM 8-10-2010-(after tried 2nd cold restart before going to bed. The first log entry of the three I see now was just an MBAM scan results, which it found nothing, I was testing the scan function after completing the reinstall. I can send that along as well-(scan results log entry), if you need it. So far I only have the 2 log entries for the MBAM program boot-up so far.

I don't use either Bit-Torrent or Limewire, they are P2P file-sharing programs, are they not? I really don;t know much more than that about them-(again I'm not a novice, nor an expert, somewhere in between). I have used sites like Rapidshare, etc periodically to donwload large files, but I don't use any if my security software prompts me against it or I've heard negative reviews of that service.. As to all those blocked IP addresses I have always seen those being blocked since I first started using MBAM-(June 2009). I'm on broad-band cable connection-(Time Warner), so it's always on, in case I hadn't mentioned that. Both MBAM and McAfee Security Ctr have been working together fine since last year, although my McAfee Security Ctr was fully upgraded as part of normal updates, here a few weeks ago, but I didn't notice any conflicts after McAfee program was upgraded. The only problem seems to be MBAM won't load with Windows start-up-(like it's always done till up to 2 days ago, when this started). Once I'm able to manually pull it up on my own, and click to activate its protection module, the program comes on and starts working instatntly, as if there was never any problem with it. I could leave my computer on-(sleep mode at night), but I'd like to shut it off as I usually do at night, and not worry this problem w/MBAM will cause problems during Windows booting up.

We probably just need to set the protection module to delay when it starts. This is a common issue with McAfee.

The link below is for a ZIP archive that contains a registry export. This registry export can be imported into your registry to set the protection module in Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to wait 2 minutes before loading when you start your computer. Simply save this ZIP archive on your desktop, open it, double-click on the registry export file that is inside of it, and when asked if you are certain that you want to import it please answer 'Yes'. It will tell you when it is done, and then if you restart your computer then it should be working OK.

Okay, I'm clear on downloading that ZIP file, and your instructions, but I'm a bit confused over how this will correct the problem . From your last post, it sounds like MBAM and McAfee are conflicting-(is it possible because McAfee program was completely upgraded a few weeks ago?) and by delaying MBAM from loading, McAfee-(which may be loading 1st?) can load first w/o any interference from MBAM? MBAM is already taking several minutes to load now-(if and when it does so). By adding this file into my registry will it apparently delay it even further from loading? I don't mean to question your help-(it has been very much appreciated!), I just make it a point never to mess with the registry, rather let a certified repair tech do it. (In the case of this computer, it is not quite 2 yrs old and has never had to be serviced up till now). You mention this is a common issue with McAfee, delaying or preventing to load of other security software, such as MBAM?

Link to post

The issue is that on Windows XP, MBAM will load very early, and McAfee loads very late. When McAfee loads, it automatically scans some files on your computer, and this scan ignores McAfee's exclusions list. During this scan is when McAfee conflicts with MBAM, so tell MBAM to wait to load typically solves the problem.

Sorry I took so long getting back to you-(very busy today!), I understand your last post, explaining the conflict, and that this is an issue with Windows XP, however if I didn't advise, I'm running Vista Home Premium/Ver-6 SP2. You advised this usually takes care of this problem-(the loading of both programs), as when MBAM does finally load for me, I can turn it on-(if prot'n module was unchecked), manually, and the program works okay then, so this is essentially just a loading problem. I am thinking I should create a Windows restore-point prior to my importing the file from the Zip file you advised to download into the Windows registry. Earlier today I did a cold start-up, and Mcafee loaded first-(on time), and 4 minutes later MBAM loaded-(with protection module fully activated w/o my having to enable it in the program manually), exactly normal, however I can't be sure the next cold start-up will be the same. Your thoughts? (again thanks for all the help, I'm cautious when making changes!!)

... I am thinking I should create a Windows restore-point prior to my importing the file from the Zip file you advised to download into the Windows registry.

Normally this is a very good idea. In this case it doesn't matter, as it's creating a new setting that can be deleted easily without causing problems with anything else.

It is possible that even with the "Delayed Start" setting for the service in Windows Vista that McAfee's startup scan is just taking too long, and our protection module just needs delayed another minute or two at startup. That registry export should resolve that issue by causing the protection module to wait an extra 2 minutes before trying to activate.

Okay, I did another cold-start up this morning, and McAfee and MBAM loaded about the same time, 4-minutes into loading, with MBAM's prot'n module enabled and running w/o having to switch it on manually. No error msgs came up up at all. It seems possibly that something has corrected itself on its own, but not positive. I still have that Zip file I downloaded from your link-(*haven't imported it as of yet), in case I decide to import it into the registry like you suggested. I'm going to let it stand as is for now for a few days and see if this reasonably normal loading time for everything persists, if if doesn't, I will probably go ahead and import that file into the registry and see if that is what is needed. Thanks again for all your assistance, very much appreciated. *If the imported file doesn't help-(if I have continuing problems). I'll be back on this forums, requesting further help. Thanks again!!

I'm back again!. I tried a cold-start-up this morning, figuring everything would load okay and in a timely fashion, as it has the past few times, however this morning Mcafee loaded okay, but about 5 minutes into loading, I got the same error msg for MBAM that I've listed for you previously. I can click on the shortcut icon on the desktop for MBAM, and it brings the program up, but the protection module was not enabled and I had to click on same to enable it-(same thing every time I get the error msg for it). Once I turn the module on, MBAM tells me it's up and running, and its icon appears on the taskbar. I was going to try and import that delay-file from that Zip archive you provided me the download link for, but when I open that Zip, it displays two similiar delay files. It appears the one-(with the x64 designation), should be the one I double-click on-(this indicates its for 64-bit system does it not? I'm running 64-bit Vista on my system and figure this is the one to select to import. Can you advise? I've added a screen-pic image-(add'ed attachment to this post) of the contents to that Zip archive folder. Thanks!
