Strange things still after MBAM, ESS and SBS&D - remnants from Rogues, TDSS, Tojans, Adware

Recommended Posts

Help please. Tried self-help but seeing strange things still when go to use FireFox or IE8.

1) What I had, 2) What I've done and 3) Where it's at now - which is real easy - I'm asking for help because I don't think got it all clean so at bottom is DDS.txt and attached is a zip file with other text/log files as instructed plus a few I gathered from MBAM and ESS results during my 'self-help' attempt.

1) What I had ...

Don't know what began this whole mess but ended up with SecurityTool ulimately making my system unusable. There were other nasties on there as well (you will see below) but Security Tool seemed to be the show stopper.

2) What I did ...

Disconnected from internet.

Using flash drive and another computer I managed to get Process Explorer on the system and was quick enough to run it and see and kill 942058.exe. (Following this self-help guide: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=17583 "MBAM won't run(Fix), SystemSecurity")

This allowed me to get MBAM installed (from flash drive with updated filters.ref from another computer), updated then ran 'Full Scan'. About 300 items infected, clicked to remove, saved log (log attached), rebooted as requested to finish cleaning. Did the reboot.

Highlights of the MBAM log included "Rootkit.TDSS" which it seemed to indicate it took care of.

However seeing self-help guide: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=12709 which talks about TDSS, rootkits, etc. and RootRepeal I thought I would follow it's guidance to see if any 'xxx.sys' showed up. Installed and ran RootRepeal > Files > C: drive. "0 hidden/locked file(s)" was the result.

I think I then connected the network, opened mbam, updated (1 day difference in update) and ran a second scan. No infections reported.

Around this point I decided to turn off 'system restore' to dump what it had in it guessing the odds were good that it may have bad stuff. [Note - I haven't done anything with prefetch folder and don't know if that matters or not anyway.]

I also installed CCleaner and had it remove IE and Firefox history/temp files, etc.

Given the amount of junk found by mbam I thought I'd install Spybot Search & Destroy via flash drive. Once running I had SBS&D update via network. [no tea-timer, tea-timer off]. I updated, immunized and ran scan. Mostly cookies but some more interesting items left around that it did find some including IE security warning (can see in log file). I said 'fix' all problems. Saved log (attached). Wasn't prompted to restart but did anyway.

I then decided to uninstall the free CA anti-virus provided by my ISP as it hadn't seemd to do well for me.

Got a trial version of eset ESS (NOD32 w/firewall, v4.2.58), installed, updated to latest definition file and ran full scan on memory and c: drive. It found some bad downloaded game files (PUPs) and ok'd them to be deleted. (log attached).

I then was thinking maybe MBAM and the others might have things clean. (All does not appear ok as you will see though.)

I did use SBS&D and Control Panel 'Internet Options' > add-on's to see what BHO, ActiveX type items might be here. Some were without info and confused me as possible remnants, old or possible bad things. Wasn't sure. Left alone. One of them I Googled and was told it was part of My.Freeze.com (a bad guy removed by one or more tools above) so I became concerned but also getting very confused.

I finally opened up FireFox (and later Internet Explorer) and BAM >> eset ESS reports an address has been blocked with a really crazy long strange URL. I set FireFox (3.6.8) and IE8 to google homepage. Picture:

2eWSL.png

At this point I'm thinking I'm not clean and this requires a set of experienced expert eyes. So I follow "I'm Infected - What do I do now..."

I used DeFogger as instructed.

I've done the DDS thing (I disabled eset anti-virus/anti-malware while running DDS)

DDS log below. Attach.txt is attached.

Did the GMER thing, saved ark.txt and is attached.

Am I clean? May be mostly? Got some final cleanup to do I think. Help please. I don't know if I'm at risk and I don't like eset ESS telling me of blocking a crazy URL.

These were the highlights of the mbam log (but full log attached). Below this is the DDS log.

Hello rose_and_thorn! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.
  • Stay with the thread until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed about any changes.

Thank you for your detailed explanation! There was no need so much detail, thanks to the log files that you have provided us is much easier and faster to get acquainted. Fortunately, ESET Smart Security has successfully prevented a more serious infection, because the malware has tried to exploit vulnerabilities in Java, to infect even more serious your system. Do you have a license for ESET Smart Security or Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware?

Step 1

Please, uninstall the following applications:

  1. Adobe Reader 9.1
  2. Ask Toolbar

You can read, how to do this here:

Step 2

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Step 3

I also see you have Viewpoint installed...

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player

Step 4

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

  1. JavaRa log
  2. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  3. a new fresh DDS log only

Thank you Borislav for your help.

I will have license for both MBAM and ESET ESS by Monday. ESS is on 30 trial and is updating as scheduled. Once I get MBAM license I will enable protection and schedule updates (hourly) and quick scan (daily) [unless your have other recommendations].

Uninstalled Adobe Reader 9.1

Uninstalled Ask Toolbar

Ran JavaRa, log is below

Deleted Java folders as directed

Uninstalled Viewpoint Media Player (there were no add/remove listings for just 'viewpoint' or 'viewpoint manager')

Launched MBAM > Updated > did 'Quick Scan", log is below

Got DDS.scr again, ran, DDS log is below

I did restart my computer after the uninstalls and by habit ran ccleaner after the restart and just prior to running MBAM. My apologies as you didn't say to do this and I did it without thinking. I haven't done anything else beyond what you asked me to do. Although I look forward to seeing what you advise next as I see things in the DDS log that seem questionable or unnecessary. Other than the update for MBAM I have not purposely used the internet nor have I used FireFox or IE8. I only turned on the internet for the MBAM update. Also - I left eset ESS running while doing DDS - I hope that was OK. Wasn't thinking and just followed instructions.

Thank you!

Good!

About CCleaner and so on:

http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/reg...weaking_13.html

Now:

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Thank you for the link to miekiemos' blog article on registry cleaners. I agree - although clearly you can see I've got a few of these on my computer and look forward to removing them. Not my choice that they were installed and this gives me stronger info to share with another user that thinks differently and falls for these things and has access to my system (but not since this mess). This fellow seems to have some strange attraction to these things which the blog talks about as questionable at best and can be much worse! I'll share the article with him and he can mess with his own computer and not mine. I'm glad to see what Combo-Fix found to remove. I do use ccleaner but I do not use it for it's reg cleaner feature. I use it for cleaning temp files, browser temp files mostly.

Combo-Fix log below.

By the way. I wonder if Combo-fix might have turned on system restore (saw it making a restore point)?

Once combo-fix was done and my system restarted eset ess restarted and eventually found/cleaned/quarantined mouclass.sys in C:\QooBox and an object in the system volume information\_restore that was *.sys (as well as av-test.txt as Eicar test).

Thought I should let you know. I haven't done anything else but run Combo-fix.

Thank you so much for your help!!!

By the way. I wonder if Combo-fix might have turned on system restore (saw it making a restore point)?

When ComboFix is uninstalled it reset System Restore, so if there is something dangerous in the folder will go.

Now:

Open Notepad and copy and paste the text in the code box below into it:

File::
c:\windows\Iyosalegetekolas.bin
c:\windows\Iyevodetakob.dat

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Ralph\Local Settings\Application Data\ydawcvitf

Save the file to your desktop and name it CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. It may ask to reboot. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Note: These instructions and script were created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these instructions or use this script as it could damage the workings of your system.

Did as asked.

ComboFix asked if I wanted an update. I said 'no'. My thinking was that you created the script based on the fresh version of combofix I got just 8-10 hours ago and didn't want to risk messing things up. But on the otherside of the coin I always want to get updates. Hope that was ok to say 'no' this time. When it first installed yesterday I did allow it to check for updates.

Anyway ... log below. Thank you ...

Borislav,

Thank you for your continued help.

I've been cautious but have tested it. It's looking good although some questions and I understand you may have more to have me do so I will be patient and await next directions from you.

What I did do:

========== IE8 =============

IE8 - I set the security settings (control panel > internet options > security tab) for internet and others to reset/default state/recommended (as by Microsoft). I noticed before doing so that trusted sites (I only had a few - and really only one I care about) were empty - no problem. And since I was unsure of the state of 'custom' settings on the security I thought it might be better to have MS reset them to default state.

I used IE8 - no suprises. I didn't do anything crazy to test it. Google news and a few basic sites.

==========FireFox============

For FireFox - I set that to always go to just my homepage (Google.com) vs 'last visited webpage' as I noticed during my worst times of the infection Firefox would open up to the last 5-6 webpages last opened to and some of them were not desireable.

For FireFox I also looked at the Extensions and see "Wyeke 1.0 - Search from address bar" there and recall MBAM and ComboFix removing the key things for that Ad-ware ... so I'm wondering if that should be part of final clean up - to try and remove that extension (or phantom remnant of it) from FFox extensions.

Not sure about the other firefox extensions. Here's a picture:

I left all as it is and used FireFox to visit a few basic websites as well. No problems noticed.

Last steps:

Step 1

To enable CD Emulation programs using DeFogger please perform these steps:

  1. Please download DeFogger to your desktop.
  2. Once downloaded, double-click on the DeFogger icon to start the tool.
  3. The application window will now appear. You should now click on the Enable button to enable your CD Emulation drivers
  4. When it prompts you whether or not you want to continue, please click on the Yes button to continue
  5. When the program has completed you will see a Finished! message. Click on the OK button to exit the program.
  6. If CD Emulation programs are present and have been enabled, DeFogger will now ask you to reboot the machine. Please allow it to do so by clicking on the OK button.

Step 2

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall
