As often as they have something new to add to the database. That could be once a day, or ten times a day. Sometimes you'll even see a lot more than 10 updates in a day.

Both versions get updated the same amount of times, typically 4-6 times per day.

Just to expand on this real quick, when you purchase a license, and use your ID and Key to unlock the paid features in Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, you need to set up an update schedule before it will begin automatically updating. You can do this by going to the 'Protection' tab in Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and clicking on the 'Scheduler' button, and then you can create and add an update schedule to the list (make sure you click the 'Add' button, or the update schedule will not be remembered).
