Hi,

My computer started behaving strangely recently (slowing to a crawl and redirecting to suspicious websites). After running Spybot S&D it came up with Vundo as the culprit. After trying to remove it, Spybot required a run after reboot, which did not work. Avast also detected a series of unusually named files, but crashed when I tried to move them to the vault.

Can anyone here help me remove Vundo (and anything else that may be lurking beneath the surface)?

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated. I'll get onto the logs as soon as I can (I need to head off to work now, I wasn't expecting such a rapid reply!).

OK, I have attempted to follow the instructions but I have hit a potential roadblock. Malwarebytes has been running now for 46 hours and has found 75905 infected objects so far. It seems to be going very slow (as my computer was in general when I got the virus) but it goes particularly slowly when it finds an infected file, and given that it has found so many it is taking a long time! It found about 60000 trz####.tmp files in the system32 folder (# = either 0 to 9 or A to F), and now it is very slowly going through some unp#########.tmp files located in "C:\windows\temp\_avast5_\" where # = 0 to 9. I estimate that at the current rate it will take another 48 hours to go through the unp.tmp files, and then it has the rest of the scan to complete.

Everything else on my computer has frozen at this point. Explorer has stopped responding, so I cannot click on the taskbar, I cannot minimise anything, the only window that I can click on is the Malwarebytes window. Should I leave it going for another ~50 hours or should we try something else? Running an antivirus program for 100 hours doesn't strike me as normal!!

Thanks!

Matt

  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

It was very serious......

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

I did as instructed regarding turning off any anti-virus software etc but I could not access Windows defender. When I tried to open it no window would appear. I tried going control panel > administrative tools > services, and turning off windows defender from there. I then ran ComboFix and it got to the scanning stage where it stated that an infected computer may take more than double the average 10 minutes, I left this running whilst I was at work and came back 10 hours later to find that my computer had frozen at the same point that I had left it (same ComboFix message about running time).

I am going to try again tonight, unless you have a different suggestion.

Thanks for your help so far!

OK, tried two more times, I can't get ComboFix to run to completion. The first time I left the room and came back 10 minutes later and my computer was asking me which method it would like to start up since an unsafe shutdown had occured (due to a blue screen I think it said). I tried again but this time it just restarted my computer after about 2 minutes. I don't have a C:\Combo-Fix.txt file, but there is a C:\Combo-Fix file without a file extension which is about 19Mb, I can't open it though by going through notepad, it says I don't have permission (I have full administrative privilages as far as I'm aware).

It won't finish in Safe Mode either. It sits for a bout 10 minutes on the screen where it says that the scan may take a while then the screen goes black and it goes into a chkdsk. It says it is deleting index '...........'. I noticed the names Borland.dat, goldun.dat and catchme.dat if that is of any use!

I'm not sure if it was Borland actually, but the other two were there.

Attached.

Here is some other info that may be of use:

- Google is redirecting many of my searches

- My system is running much quicker than before (this coincided with final MalwareBytes run), the file-tracker in Avast also stopped constantly deleting ddbyax.dll (and probably the trz###.trp files), which could have been contributing to the slow computer.

Qoobox.zip

Manually delete your copy of ComboFix and Qoobox folder, download a new fresh one and save it on your desktop. Next, click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste the following bolded text into the run box & click OK.

"%userprofile%\desktop\Combofix.exe" /stepdel

If that doesn't work, try this one.

"%userprofile%\desktop\Combofix.exe" /killall

The first method resulted in my laptop just switching itself off. I suspect it may have been an overheat since it wouldn't turn on for a couple of minutes afterwards.

I tried the second method and placed the laptop next to an open window(!) and it worked!! Finally, a log!!!

Open Notepad and copy and paste the text in the code box below into it:

http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=59485

KillAll::

Collect::[8]
c:\windows\system32\ssqpmm.dll

Registry::

"wvvutuaudio"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\cbxvvvaudio]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\ljkkjiaudio]

Save the file to your desktop and name it CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. It may ask to reboot. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Note: These instructions and script were created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these instructions or use this script as it could damage the workings of your system.

Problems again - ComboFix wouldn't go past the screen where it says the scan should take 10 minute (I left it for 3 hours) when I started it by dragging the CFScript.txt onto the exe.

2 quick questions:

1) ComboFix asks me if I want to update, if I click yes it will restart after downloading the update - would this mean that the the CFScript.txt would no longer be active?

2) Should the CFScript contain the first line "http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=59485" ??

When my computer boots up I now get an application error for the sqqpmm.dll that ComboFix quarantined from the previous run, I suppose that is a good thing because it means that the ssqpmm.dll is not working now?

Thanks for your help so far.

Download a new fresh copy of ComboFix before CFScript.xt

Of course, you should.

Unfortunately, it's still there.
